Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Colossians 2:7

Have you ever heard of the saying we become what we behold.

I never really understood this saying and Bible verse until a few weeks ago when the idea of becoming what you listen to, read, and watch really sunk in. This is not a topic many people discuss. I think that everyone assumes that this is something others should know already or have already in them. Seeds are planted in our mind every day. When we read our devotional in the morning we plant a spiritual seed in our minds. Every day we nurture that seed to grow into a spiritual plant in our minds.

But when we listen to a rap song with profanity or watch an R rated movie, we plant a unholy seed in our minds. I can honestly say that putting on my set of headphones and listening to a few tunes is tempting. Taking a devotional in the morning and reading the Bible seems much more harder. It is human nature to choose the easier thing.

Now the big picture is, do you want your mind to be filled with weeds or roses? Do you want to plant seeds that will grow into beautiful flowers or ugly and choking weeds. If you plant too many weeds, they will choke out the sunflowers and your mind will be filled with unholy and unworthy things.

Listening to a few songs here and there is totally understandable. We all have our interests and likes. But our main interest should be in Jesus Christ. So the next time you want to watch that new TV show, put your phone down and pick up Colossians 2:7 to remind you of what Jesus wants you to do.

Trust me, it is worth the effort.

Dearest Jesus,

I love you so much. Help me and everyone in this world to know what to plant in our minds. Help us plant your holy roses and life-changing sunflowers. You died for us and rose again so that you can give us a new life. Help us to accept that righteousness in you by choosing to read your word instead of listening to something we shouldn't. You see everything and everyone. Help us put a smile on your face when you see your children reading your word while their phone is in their bags. We all devote ourselves to planting good seeds.

Amen.
