Late Night Flower Run -- Short Story 22

••••••••••••••••

Finishing up at work, I let my hair out of it's bun and got ready to lock up the old flower store.

I shut off the 'open' sign and searched for the key.

Locking the front door, I went into the back to turn on the alarm and leave.

Somebody knocking on the front door made me peak around the corner. Coming back to the front of the store, I saw a boy who looked slightly older than me looking in.

"We're closed." I shrugged, pointing to the off 'open' sign.

"I know that, but I know exactly what I want." He pointed past me to a bunch of flowers.

"These?" I picked up the bouquet.

"Yeah!" He nodded. "I just need those."

"But we're closed." I acted as if I was walking away to finish locking up. I actually went back to turn my till on.

"Oh come on, lady!" He almost pressed his face against the glass door. "I've got the money right here." He whipped out his wallet.

"On one condition," I put my hand on the lock, "You don't call me 'lady' again while you're in here. It makes me sound old."

He laughed and practically pushed me over opening the door.

"Somebody is in a hurry." I muttered, making my way back to the counter where he waited. "That'll be $7."

"You could say that." He handed me a $20. "Thanks." He grabbed the flowers and ran out before I could count out his change.

"Weirdo." I whispered, going back to lock up the front door.

After I set the alarm, I left the store for the night.

--------------------

The next day, I had the night shift again. Closing up always makes my night longer than needed.

Wiping off the counter, I looked at the time.

8:47p.m.

Only 13 minutes.

I made sure everything was in order for the morning shift and emptied the tip jar.

I remembered the $13 the boy left last night. I would give it to him if he ever came back.

Tucking a piece of hair behind my ear, I began cashing out for the night.

Just as I was finishing, the front bell rang; telling me somebody was coming into the shop.

"Hi," I glanced up, "We close in- Oh, it's you."

"What? I don't deserve the whole speech?" The boy from the night before grinned.

"We close in 6 minutes."

"That's okay, I won't be that long." He smiled.

I pretended to busy myself as he wandered the store.

"Can I help you find anything?" I asked.

"I'm just looking for a couple of daffodils."

"Over here." I pointed to a bucket holding singles and bouquets of them.

He picked 6 and brought them over to the counter.

"Need them wrapped?"

"Sure, thanks."
