Endless Questions -- Short Story 16

••••••••••••••••

Tying up my long brown hair, I added a hair band.

Today will be a good day.

I reassured myself with one last glance in the mirror.

Time to go to school.

Picking my bag up from the counter, I said good-bye to my dad and left the house to wait for my bus.

Digging my feet into the gravel on my driveway, I tried cleaning off my muddy Converse shoes.

I should have washed them.

Hearing the bus approaching, I forgot the thought and re-adjusted my bag.

Hopping up the stairs, I went to take my usual spot on the bus. By usual, I mean the seat I've sat in for 5 years now.

By myself.

With no one else.

Now, that probably makes me sound antisocial and angry. That's not the case. I just don't have any friends on my bus. Nobody has ever offered to sit with me and that's how it's always been.

I don't like talking in the morning, anyways. I just woke up and I'm still waking up. I'm not in the mood for conversations.

My bus rides to and from school consist of headphones and good music. It's all I've ever needed.

Taking my seat, I dug out my earbuds. Plugging them into my phone, I shut myself out from the world.

Staring out my window, I almost didn't notice the bus making a new stop. I wouldn't have if the new kid didn't sit beside me, that is.

"Can I sit here?" The boy was getting looks from everybody as I took out my earbuds.

I couldn't say no, could I?

"Go for it." I shrugged, turning my music down. He didn't need to hear it.

"Thanks." His worried expression was replaced by a smile. "I'm Nate."

"Jodi." I left on earbud out, just to be nice.

As the bus carried on, students continued to laugh and whisper with their friends.

"So, what grade are you in?" Nate asked, trying to ease the tension.

"11." I thought a moment before asking, "You?"

"12." He grinned, ignoring the chaos around us.

Nodding, I turned my attention back to my music. Watching the cars pass by outside, I could feel Nate digging around in his bag.

Glancing over at him, I caught him putting on a pair of glasses.

"Surprised?" Nate looked at me, pushing the glasses further up his nose.

Shaking my head, I pushed up my own glasses.

"Not much of a talker, are you?" He laughed, giving me a weird look.

"Only when I have nothing to say." I sent him a smirk.

"Well, what's your favourite colour?"

"Purple." I picked at my nail polish. "What's yours?"

"Green." Nate zipped up his backpack, "Favourite... sport?"

"I don't play sports."

"We'll have to fix that." Nate laughed, "I play basketball and volleyball."
