Running Away Like A Man -- Short Story 6

••••••••••••••••

"If you don't hurry up, we'll be late and you'll miss Tessa!" Angie teased me as she waited at my front door.

"I'm coming!"

"Finally." She laughed at me as I hit the floor at the bottom of my stairs, "You know, with how nervous you are, I'm starting to think you like Tess a lot more than I thought, Jake."

Ignoring Angie, I led the way out of my house and jumped into her car.

"You're lucky I'm your best friend." She smirked, starting the car and turning on the radio.

"I'm not so sure." I grumbled.

"Without me, you wouldn't have a ride to the date I set up."

"It's not a date."

"Fine, but I did set up this up- the three of us hanging out. If you end up dating Tessa, it's all thanks to me." Angie grinned over at me.

"I'll thank you when that happens, which will be never."

Angie, my best girl friend since childhood, just so happens to be best friends with the girl I'm crushing on. She invited Tessa to the arcade so that I could hang out with her outside of school without it being a date.

"You never know." Angie shrugged, turning up the radio to sing along.

--------------------

"Jake, you've got to tell her sometime." Angie nudged me as Tess went to buy a candy bag.

"She hates me." I took a sip of my pop.

"She does not." Ang frowned, "She thinks you're cute."

I think she's perfect.

Throwing my empty can in the recycling, I noticed Tessa walking back towards us.

I really do think she's perfect.

Not even just her looks, her personality too. I just can't get over how real she is.

I would never dare tell anyone though. My guy friends don't even know about me crushing on her and Angie only knows a little bit.

I'm a guy. It's bad enough that Angie gets me to admit how I feel. No one else needs to know.

"You guys ready to mini golf?" Angie grinned.

"Sure." I smiled, looking over at Tess.

"I'm pretty bad, but okay." She laughed.

"Don't worry, Jake can help you out." I caught Angie whispering to her. Tess giggled at it as we walked to the mini golf.

The game started off great. Angie didn't let off that I liked Tess anymore than needed and I got to help Tess mini golf. It was just the three of us, and Ang backed off as much as she could.

Near the 9th hole though, we caught up to a group of 4 guys around our age who looked like they wanted to pick a fight with just about anybody.

Laughing and joking around with Tessa, I did my best to not worry about the guys in front of us. I figured if we waited for them to move along, we'd have no trouble.

I was wrong.

"Aren't you two pretty." The biggest one of the four winked at Ang and Tess.

"Come play with us." Another smirked, the other two guys whistling.
