My Mysterious Masquerade Boy -- Short Story 27

••••••••••••••••

"Come on Taylor, we've gotta go!" I yelled at my best friend. "How long does it take to put on lipgloss?"

"With her, a life time." Her brother Kevin snickered as he walked by me.

"Apparently." I grumbled under my breath. "My car is running!" I shouted louder.

"Coming!" Taylor sang, her voice drifting down the stairs.

"Finally!" I threw my hands in the air.

"Wait, I forgot something." Watching her disappear back upstairs, I decided to run out to my car to turn it off.

Taking my time, I lifted my dress as I walked to keep it from getting dirty.

I checked my reflection in a window outside of Taylor's house.

Our school is hosting a masquerade ball type of thing, and everyone going is dressing up in a big way; girls in floor length downs and boys in tuxedoes. Masquerade masks are mandatory.

Shutting my car off, I hustled back inside. Wearing nothing but a dress outside at dusk gets cold.

"She's still up there?" Kevin stopped in the living room doorway.

"It's Taylor," I laughed, trying to make a joke out of my frustration, "Always running fashionable late."

"I'll say." He shook his head. "Being twins, we're not really the same." He chuckled, stepping into the living room.

Did I mention Taylor and Kevin are twins?

Well, they are.

Tired of standing in my small, 2 inch heels, I followed Kevin to the couch.

"So," I adjusted my dress as I took a seat, "Why aren't you going tonight?"

"Didn't want to." Kevin shrugged, flipping through T.V. channels.

"Why not?" I watched him instead of the T.V.

"Just didn't feel like it." He switched his attention to me. "You look really nice by the way."

"Don't change the subject," I laughed, blushing from his comment.

"Fine, don't take the compliment." He waved his hands, "Cool with me."

Rolling my eyes, I played with the mask I wore around my neck for the time being.

Taylor and I have only been friends for the past 2 years, but it definitely feels like longer. I met her through my younger brother who knows Kevin. After meeting Kevin, I was introduced to Taylor. And boom! A friendship grew. Kevin and I have grown pretty close too.

"You should just leave without her." I heard Kevin mumble.

"I'm seriously considering it at this point." I glanced over at the front door, hoping to hear her coming down the stairs.

I didn't.

"So, why don't you wanna go tonight?" I saw Kevin smile beside me, "And don't say 'cause I didn't want to' because that is the lamest thing ever."

"But that is why." He laughed.

"Sure it is." I teased.

"Macy, I swear." Kevin kept laughing.

"You're totally lying." I smirked, sending him a 'gotcha' look.

"Mace! I'm ready!" Taylor could be heard coming down the stairs.
