20 Questions -- Short Story 32
••••••••••••••••
Sitting at my tiny desk in my room, I attempted to study for my upcoming English 12 exam.
I read and reread sections of definitions, that to me, were pretty useless. But that might be because I can't remember them.
I felt tempted to text one of my friends and invite them over. They wouldn't have to worry about my over-protective dad stepping in because he's away for the night.
I picked up my phone to text any of my three closest friends. But mid-text I remembered they all went away for the night to some nursing presentation. All three of them want to become nurses and I don't.
Heaving a giant sigh of disappointment, I tried to study again. Word after word, I read and learnt the definition.
In a last minute hope and desperation text, I began typing out a message to my best guy friend Aiden. Usually on a friday night he can be found gaming with his friends, but I figured I'd give it a try.
I was in the middle of typing when a tap on my window made me jump. I accidentally threw my phone into the air.
Scowling, I bent over to pick it up when another tap came. To say I was scared would be a huge understatement.
I knew it couldn't be a simple as the wind blowing a tree branch against my window because there weren't any trees on this side of the house.
Completely freaked out, I stood still. I clutched my phone as I waited for another tapping noise to come.
Just as I thought it had stopped, a third one sounded, scaring the wits out of me.
I took deep breaths to calm myself down. Opening the 'emergency call' dial-pad on my phone, I crept over to my window.
I knew the second I got to the window that it was someone throwing small pebbles because another one came flying up from the ground.
Preparing for it to be anyone, I whipped open my window.
"Cleo!" Aiden's grinning face looked up at me, "Finally! I thought you would never come."
"Aiden?" I relocked my phone, "What on earth are you doing?"
"Trying to get you to let me in." I noticed him go uneasy.
"Every heard of, oh I don't know, a doorbell?"
"I tried, but you didn't come to the door."
"What about a phone call?"
"I tried that too." Aiden shrugged, dropping the pebbles he still had in his hand.
"My phone hasn't rang." I held it out the window to emphasize what I was saying.
"That's what brought me to your window."
"You freaked me out." I admitted, shivering from the cold. "I'll meet you at the door."
I slammed my window shut before stumbling to the door.
Once it was open, I saw Aiden up close and realized how cold he looked. With chattering teeth and a shiver going down his spine every few seconds, I knew he needed to come in quickly.
I ushered him in and we ran back upstairs.
"Sorry I scared you." Aiden said once seated on my bed with a blanket around him. "I think I have the wrong phone number for you."
"I got a new one like five months ago." I laughed until I remembered the reality of why.
"But I think when I deleted your old one yesterday, I actually deleted your new one."
