August, Summer, and Winters -- Short Story 38
••••••••••••••••
Growing up, my best friend and I have gone through many friend groups. Sometimes solo, other times we've hung out with the same group. It always changes. Except for the fact that we've stuck together through it all.
Some have told us that at first glance, we can be mistaken for sisters -- we're that close to each other. It probably also has to do with how both of us have dirty blonde hair- which we almost wear the same way- blue eyes, and unmissably loud laughs.
When we introduce ourselves to new people, the assuming that we're sisters continues because of our names. August and Summer. People believe our parents planned it like that. Truth is, we met in grade 1. Since then, we've been there for one another. Our names only make it that much better that we're so close.
So, after knowing Summer for so long, it's not a shocker when we go back to school after the summer break and she's freaking about a new boy on our homeroom list.
Cole W. is the whole name. Nobody knows what his last name is -- believe me, Summer asked around.
"Aren't you excited?!" She bounced in her seat. New kids are what she lives for. Even as a senior in high school now, Summer can't resist being restless to meet the new student.
"Honestly?" I pushed my bangs to the side, "I'm not that excited." My best friend's face went dead serious.
"Actually?" She turned all the way around in her seat. For whatever reason, Summer chose to take the desk in front of mine instead of the empty one on my right.
"Actually." I nodded, rolling my eyes as she dramatically gasped. I knew no one even heard her. The rest of our homeroom class is made up of kids we've either already been friends with and left, or still talk to now and then. Nobody was wanting to chat with us, so no one was listening in on us.
"How could you say that?" Summer slapped my arm, which was holding my head up. My hand slipped from under my chin and slammed onto the desk below. "Whoops." She apologized.
"It's just a new kid." I shrugged. Summer and I are extremely different in that sense. We both love meeting new people, but she's way more into new students than I am. Plus, she's much more dramatic than me.
"I bet he's super hot." Summer wagged her eyebrows, making me snort with laughter. "How much you wanna bet?"
"I'm not betting you anything." I grinned, shaking my head back forth. "I lose every time I make a bet, remember?"
"Yeah," She threw her head back, laughing. "I need money."
"You were gonna scam me?" I pulled a theatre performance out, "How dare you." I shot daggers at her.
"You love me, August." She smirked, flipping her hair over her shoulder.
We came to the class early because Summer was that excited to see the new boy. She wanted to be sure we'd see him walk into the classroom. I suggested that maybe he won't show up until the room is full; that way he's less noticeable. Summer didn't like that idea and dragged me here anyways.
At this point, I should've bet her about him not coming early because we've been here for almost 15 minutes. The bell only just rang and kids are still piling in. Most of the desks are full; the only six left are the one to my right and five on the far side where not many people are sitting.
"I don't know why." I mumbled just loud of enough for only her to hear.
"Rude." She glared, even with a smile tugging at her lips. Whipping around to face the front, I could tell her jaw dropped at the sight in the doorway.
