Katie looked around and sat down on the steps outside, waiting rather impatiently for her car to turn up. She rested her head in her hands and looked out at the passing traffic in front of her. Tears filled her eyes and she felt drained, something that was becoming very familiar to her over the last couple of weeks. Just then, she heard someone come outside too but didn't turn around to see who it was. Whoever the person may be, she could hear them light up a cigarette and linger at the door for a minute or two.
"Want one?" she heard a familiar voice say from beside her. She turned her head a little to see Colin standing up and holding a cigarette out for her to take. Katie looked back at the traffic and tried to quickly wipe her tears away without him noticing before she answered him.
"You know I don't smoke." She said in a low and gruff voice. He surprised her even more when he sat on the steps beside her. He didn't speak so she decided to break the silence. "Aren't you worried about getting your tux dirty?"
Colin remembered the repetition of her words from a long time ago when they sat and waited for her cab after the gala. Except when she asked this time, she used a monotonous tone, like she could care less but still enough to ask.
"I have a million of them at home anyways." He knew she would remember, but didn't expect her to tell him she did.
"Going home?"
"What do you think?" she refused to look at him when she spoke.
"You could be just getting some air like me..."
"Definitely not. I'm not going back in there, I'm going home."
"You're breaking my heart Katie." Colin admitted with a sigh. He needed to talk to her. He craved her attention, the way she smiled and how her laugh would make him feel warm inside, but he would get none of that out of this encounter.
"Really? I'm breaking your heart, that's rich." She scoffed. She wanted him to talk again, because the silence was too deafening, it made her feel nervous. But she never expected him to say what he did next.
"If you tell me not to do it Katie, I won't. Just say the words and I'll call all of this off in a heartbeat."
