Colin thought he was still dreaming when he woke up the next morning and saw Katie curled up on a chair opposite his bed. She was sleeping soundly and for a moment, he savoured the sight of her. He hadn't laid eyes on her for so long. It was as if he had been walking through the scorching hot desert for weeks and she was a mirage appearing right before his eyes.
It took her only a moment to wake up from her light sleep. She had been dozing in and out of consciousness all night long. Once she saw he was awake, she almost leapt up from her chair, dread and surprise written all over her face.
"Katie?" he was confused.
"Colin? Oh thank god you're awake. Are you okay? Are you hurting- I need to call the nurse." It was as if those two months apart had never happened. She had turned back into the concerned and worried Katie she'd always been when he was around.
"You're here." His entire face lit up, a smile creeping onto his lips. It was an unusual yet funny sight to see- his body was in complete ruins, his face battered and bruised yet he still lay there grinning like an idiot.
"Of course I'm here, Andrew called me last night after the crash."
"Katie, I have so much to say to you-"
"We can talk later okay? Now's not the time. You're badly hurt and you need to get better before we talk about anything."
She had made her mind up last night, for the time being she would pretend as if nothing had happened between them. All that mattered was Colin getting better. Seeing him lying there in that hospital, seeing all his injuries made her realise that she still cared, she still loved Colin and wanted, if not needed him to be okay. No amount of trying to forget could rid her of him.
Colin wanted to address everything there and then, he had so much to say to her- that was why he was going to turn up at her doorstep last night and as she stood there in front of him he had the perfect opportunity but it was not the time anymore. She wanted to wait for his apology, so he decided it was better to do it at her preferred time although he didn't know how much longer he could take holding it all in. He felt even worse after the delight from seeing her again had resided, knowing she was probably really concerned, everyone was and it was all his fault.
It took weeks for Colin's injuries to finally heal. Even as he left the hospital, he still had a cast on his left arm and a slight limp. But Katie was by his side, she visited the hospital almost every day after work to see him and even brought him home the day he signed himself out of treatment and care. She helped him to her car and soon enough they were on their way. She was nervous enough driving her car, as it was something she didn't do often but then to top that off, Colin sitting in the passenger seat next to her made her feel worse. There was a mutual feeling in the air that day in the car, a kind of tension that neither could describe, because both of them knew what was to come.
"I can take them Katie."
"Oh please," she sniggered as she looked at him. "I think I can carry two bags for you. It's not a big deal."
"It's just that they're heavy and I feel bad." He said as she shut her trunk and began walking with him into his apartment building.
"Sorry macho man, but I can handle this. You only have one functioning arm at the minute anyways, it's not like you can carry them." Katie slung one bag over her shoulder as they walked into the elevator.
