Healing Broken Hearts
"Toffee..."
The lizard drew in a breath as (y/n) hesitated. He was truly afraid for once in his life. There were many times that he should have been scared of something. Losing his life, getting injured, starving. He had been through it all, but it had made him numb to such encounters. It allowed him to survive. Now was different. Now was important.
"I couldn't hate you if I wanted to." A sad smile adorned the princesses beautiful face. "I love you too much." Tears collected in her (e/c) eyes and her lips trembled.
He stepped over to her and strung his arms around her. He held her tightly and close to his body. His head rested on top of hers. "I love you too, (y/n)." In the moments they stood in embrace, he swore to himself that he would never let her go, never let her get hurt, never leave her alone. He would protect her. He would make her his.
Toffee finally pried himself from her and allowed her to take the wand from the table. She returned to his side and stared up at him.
"So... What now? We keep meeting by night and hoping we don't get caught?" She used her thumbs to wipe the remaining tears from her eyes. He could still tell she was hurt by his betrayal. He couldn't blame her. He hated himself for it too.
Toffee shook his head. "I will return to the castle with you, and we'll talk to Moon."
"Toffee, that's... Dangerous. Someone will catch us."
He placed his hands on her hips and leaned in close to her. "Let them catch us." His voice was filled with emotion, though his face remained stoic. He then laced their fingers together and pulled her outside his home.
The walk back to the tower was a silent one. The rain was now only a gentle drizzle. The sun reflected off of the wet stones on the castle, making it seem as if it were actually made of light.
The tower was still slick and hard to scale, but the two made it without much struggle. The trouble only started when they made it inside.
"(Y/n), there you are!" Moon said as her daughter appeared from the window. She was reasonably surprised to see her, but she became even more so when she saw a monster had followed her daughter in to the tower. Her look of confusion had transformed in to one of complete horror. "(Y-y/n), what in the world-"
"Moon," interrupted Toffee. He laid a hand on (y/n)'s shoulder. "We have much to discuss."
"(Y/n) get away from that monster!" Her mother cried. She reached out to grab her daughter, but Toffee pulled her closer to him. His arm wrapped around her waist to secure her against his chest. His eyes glared at her from behind (y/n)'s shoulder. "Unhand her!"
"Mom, please, listen to him!" (Y/n) begged. She was hoping Toffee was as confident as he was acting. She was scared. She had never really stood up to her mother before, let alone break so many laws and try to confront her about it as they were now.
"What could you ever say to me?" Moon was nearly in hysterics. (Y/n) was surprised she hadn't already called for the guards, or her father River.
"I want your daughter's hand in marriage."
Both of the women in the room felt their hearts stop, though for vastly different reasons. (Y/n) saw tears once again blur her vision, though this time they were not made of sorrow. She heard her mother run for the door and call for someone, but she couldn't hear what are said. All she could focus on was Toffee. Nothing else mattered. She turned her head to look up at him, and he was staring back at her. His gaze held more emotions than she had ever seen him show.
"Don't cry, my love," he muttered. He wiped her face and kept his hand on her jaw once he had cleared it of tears. "You will, won't you? Marry me?"
(Y/n) was afraid she would be too happy to speak, but she managed to get an "of course" out, though her voice cracked.
"Moon pie! Moon pie, what's wrong? Oh my!" It was then that (y/n)'s trance was broken and she could hear the outside world again. Her father had rushed in to the room, now standing protectively in front of his wife despite being much shorter than her. "Begone, you foul beast!"
Toffee had also noticed the disturbance. "I am no beast!" he snarled, nearly contradicting his statement.
Moon whispered something to her husband and River seemed to grow even angrier than he already was. The only thing that prevented the man from attacking the other was the fact that his daughter stood between them. "What have you done to our daughter?"
"Daddy," she pleaded. "He didn't do anything! I love him!" Both of her parents gasped. Moon was obviously light headed. "I'll run away if I have to."
Her parents remained silent. The air in the room was tense and serious.
"You are breaking so many laws, young lady," her mother said sternly. "The laws weren't changed for Eclipsa, and they will not change for you."
"But why not? Mom, you're the queen of Mewni! You can change what you want!"
Again, the room was silent. Internally, Moon was fighting a battle of her own. She had no idea if her daughter's feelings were true, or if the monster's were either. Even if they were, Toffee had murdered her own mother, (y/n)'s grandmother. How could she ever forgive him for taking that away from her? How could (y/n) have forgiven him? She also had no idea how the citizens or the High Commission would take such a drastic law change. It would alter the course of history. But to her, her daughter was worth far more than any trouble it would take to make her happy.
"I'll see what I can do."

Years have flown by since the Monster Inclusion Act was passed. The people of Mewni soon found out that the monsters were not monsters at all. They were people, just like them. They had emotions and pasts and families to feed. Both sides had suffered much.
(Y/n) was now Queen, with Toffee as her king. The people were nervous of having a monster as their king, but Toffee was good and fair to them. He loved them as any king had, but most of all he loved his wife.
