I could hear the classical instruments playing from down the hall.
The entrance to the great hall was clogged with students trying to file into the ballroom, ready for the first dance and the chance to mingle with the elite. Supposedly, according to Lucy, this dance was created to connect students to powerful people in order to set them up with careers in this world after they graduate.
I haven't thought about graduation until this second, where as we were walking down the steps, Mason had mentioned he was going to work with his father in the government.
"What do you want to do?" He had asked me.
"That's a good question" I murmur, looking instead of him and onto the larger crowd.
I didn't really have energy for this dance, I was hyping myself up a bit too much with the dress and my appearance but I don't think it was worth it piling this much makeup onto my face to talk to a bunch of old crones about the government. Sure Kalvin would be the highlight of my night, as well as the free food that would be offered, but I wasn't really sure what I was doing with my life.
Avoiding Westley, sure, and finding out who I was- ok.
I had a solid plan of what I wanted to do, but what about after that? I once had dreams of studying my way into a business school and eventually pursuing a career in the law, but that was before I realized what my icy hands could do and realizing that a world of mythical creatures actually exists.
As my friends and I finally made it into the ballroom, my jaw dropped in awe.
It was simply beautiful. The room was decorated with falling snowflakes from the ceilings, silver crystal chandeliers hung from every corner, and the room was lit up with warmth and music from the school orchestra. It was like a scene from a movie, and I was just an extra playing in it. Mason holds his hand out, giving me a crooked smile.
"Shall I have this first dance milady?" He asks.
I laugh, it was lame but it was cute. I slipped my hand in his for the second time that night and he whisked me away to the dance floor, my dress swishing as I walked. It felt heavy but manageable, I wasn't sure how I was going to survive in this thing all night.
He twirled me around until I landed in his arms and he held me closer, his hand on the middle of my back and swaying to Beethoven.
"You do look really beautiful" He notes. I'm sure my cheeks were red but I just gave him a small smile.
"You know, I don't really think we talk much. I don't know anything about you" He said.
"What did you want to know?"
"Well- I don't know. Where'd you grow up?" His smile made dimples in both of his cheeks, it made me want to stick my fingers in them.
