Chapter four

Today is Thursday. Tomorrow is my big date with Matthew Espinosa. Holy shit.

"Cassidy," My mum says, "tomorrow we'll be going to your brothers meeting."

"I can't go." I say timidly.

"And why not?" my mum asks in her American accent. Do Americans even have an accent? I don't know.

"I'm going on a date." I say shyly. My mums face lights up and a smile and laugh come out.

"With who? Is he nice? Is it a girl? because, Cassidy, if you choose to be lesbian I am totally fine with it." She says way too fast.

"Mum, it is a guy. His name is Matthew." I tell her.

"I saw that name carved into your dresser a few days ago." My mum tells me. I did carve his name into my dresser.

"He is picking me up at four o'clock." I tell her.

"Okay. Oh, my baby's going on her first date." She says happily.

"I'm not your baby." I say softly. I really am not.

"I know. But I still treat you and your brother as if you two were. Well, your adopted brother." She says.

"I know that. I'm going to do some homework." I tell her. I walk up the stairs and enter my room. I lie down on my bed and sigh.

Yesterday he asked me out. Today all the contact we made was us meeting eye contact. I don't even know if that counts as contact.

It's eight o'clock. I don't even have homework. I finish it all in class or after school in the library. I close my eyes and dream of Matthew.

I wake up and it's seven thirty. I get up, brush my hair and teeth and change into a gray sweatshirt and jeans. I slip on my black converse and apply my little bit of makeup. I walk downstairs and see my mum and Gavin.

"Good morning sweetheart." My mum says. I smile and grab a piece of French toast.

"Good bye!" I say before I exit the house and grab my bag. I walk down the side walk. I pass my grandmothers house and my gym teachers house. I turn my head around when I hear footsteps approaching. Before I can make a face out, a fist makes brutal contact with my jaw. I whimper and stumble backwards. Another fist joins in and punches the side of my head. I fall to the ground, bad mistake. Feet kick me and I hear laughing, both female and male.

"Hey!" I hear someone yell.

"Oh shit! lets go!" a male voice says. They run off and I open my eyes. I look around and see a boy with short light brown hair running towards me. He kneels next to me and holds me in his arms.

"Are you okay?" he asks.

"Yeah." I choke out. I know his face. He is one of Matthews friends. Carter.

"Here, it's better if we stand." He says. I grab his shoulder and he helps me stand. He is way taller than me, considering I am five foot exact. "I'm Carter."

"Cassidy." I say. He laughs and swings his arm around me.

"Come on, Cassidy, let's go." He says. My foot hurts like hell and he notices it. His arm snakes around my waist and he helps me walk to school. We enter the school and everyone stares. He helps me to my locked and lets me go. I lean my shoulder against the locker and look at him. "Do you need me to take you to the nurse?"

"No. It is fine. Thank you, Carter." I say. He smiles and shrugs.

"No problem." He says. He smiles again and walks away. My side hurts. My face hurts. Everything hurts. But, I can't go to the nurse. If I tell her what happened, she'll tell my mum. I don't want her to know what's happening.

The five minute bell rings and I grab my Algebra book from my locker and leave to class. I make my way into it and sit at my regular seat. As I sit down, all of the girls and guys laugh.

"Hey, Cas," Hayley says and leans over to me, "Did you trip or something because you look pretty beaten up. Or did Carter do that to you?"

Mrs. Gwenn starts class and I turn to face the front and see Cameron looking slightly back. He looks away and faces the front when he sees me. Class goes by quick and next is Chemistry. We don't need our books today so I go straight to class.

I entered the classroom and some people are already here, Matthew and Carter included. I spot my seat and see Matthew sitting at the same table. Oh right, Mr. Vengars orders.

I walk to the table and sit down on the right side of Matthew.

"Hey." He says with a smile. I smile back, sincerely this time. He brushes a hand through his hair, which swoops over his forehead, and Mr. Vengar starts to teach. "I heard about what happened this morning." He tells me.

"I think everyone has." I say.

"So what, do you like Carter?" He asks me.

"No. No, he was just there when it happened." I explain.

"When what happened?" asks. He didn't know? I thought he was already in the subject of them beating me up.

"A bunch of jocks beat me on my way to school." I say as if it were nothing.

"Who? Wh-what?" He asks in a harsh whisper and looks at me.

"It's nothing. I'm fine, see?" I tell him. Then, something very unexpected happens. He places a hand over mine on my lap and squeezes it tightly.

"You're not fine." He says, and he is right.

"Mr. Vengar," A girl from behind us says, "The school doesn't allow PDA and I don't think class time is an exception."

Mr. Vengar turns around and looks in our direction.

"You're right, Lindsay. Matthew. Cassidy. Why don't you two take a nice stroll down to Miss. Riggs' office. Just, don't have sex in the halls please." Mr. Vengar teases as Matthew and I grab our things and head out the door.

We walk down the hallway, a smirk on Matthew's face. We enter the main office and open the door to the Principles office. I don't even get how him putting his hand on mine was a severe form of PDA.

"What happened this time?" Miss. Riggs asks as we enter her office. We set our bags down and sit in two chairs.

"PDA." Matthew says. I look at him and he looks back and laughs.

"He put his hand on mine and a girl pointed it out and now we are here." I say. Mrs. Riggs gives us both an are-you-kidding-me look.

"Alright well, go to your lockers and get ready for your next class." She tells us. We grab our things and walk out the door. We make it halfway down the hallway in silence.

"Hey." I hear a male voice say from behind me. I look back and see a familiar face. I don't know his name but I see him hang out with Matthew a lot.

"Hey." Matthew says and I look at him. He has turned to the blue eyed boy. He looks at me and smiles.

"Hi, I'm J.C. You must be Cassidy, right?" the boy says.

"Yes. I am." I say.

"Ha, Matt here hasn't shut up about tonight." He tells me and laughs. Matthew's face softens and he glares at J.C. I laugh and look at Matthew. "I couldn't really blame him." He clears his throat and rushes in the words "He's never had a girlfriend before."

"Really?" I ask Matthew.

"Yeah." He says flatly.
