CHAPTER VI.
( rainy days. )
The war doesn't end with the Kannabi Bridge being destroyed, but it does give Konoha an advantage, Kakashi learns later.
(They tell her it was Minato-sensei, who managed to finish the mission, as Rin and Obito got her to safety. Good.)
And so, the war goes on.
And so, Kakashi kills, kills, and kills again.
(The predator her slim figure hides curls up in satisfaction and, bathed in blood, smiles, all teeth and no kindness left.)
(Hatake's are wolves, she's learnt, domesticated they might be.)
(Even if she's the only one left, her bones still sing when the hunt begins.)
Obito does, too. Sometimes it kills her, to see him so disturbed after a particularly difficult mission.
But they're all alive. Months of war, of conflict, of uncertainty are upon them, but—
But they're all alive.
And Kakashi—who knows the weight of being left behind—is grateful.
Grateful for the days she gets to spend by her pack's side, bickering with Obito and listening to Rin's rants about medicine, sparring against Minato-sensei and eating Kushina-nee-san's food. Grateful for the long, hot days spent training by their side; for the missions where she knows they have her back; for the fights and the arguments and the jokes and everything that comes in between.
She could do without her hormones, though.
She's thirteen already. She gets it, her body is ready for the next stage, whatever.
It's—
It's distracting.
Or, well. Obito is.
Which is a problem in itself, because Kakashi figured her crush would have gone away by now, but.
Obviously not.
Before, she only wanted his attention. His smiles. His compliments, maybe.
Now, now it's—unacceptable, that's what it is.
Because now she wants him. In a way she's never wanted anyone before.
And it's—
It's embarrassing. Especially when Minato-sensei gives her those knowing looks every time she has to share a tent with Obito, or when they bathe together in missions, or when she gets distracted during training because, apparently, now that he's fifteen Obito's decided to forgo shirts on training grounds.
Don't ask her. Please.
Her heart doesn't stop beating faster each time she sees him, and every time there's sweat dripping down his torso her face becomes a furnace. She's sure that without her mask, her teammates would have discovered her crush by now.
