Chapter 1: Je suis désolé. (I'm sorry.)
+++
It was 15 minutes to midnight. We are sitting at the front yard porch.
Nasa bahay ako nila Miko to celebrate New Year... My parents are abroad: business meeting kaya pinilit ako nila Tita Thelma, Miko's mom, to celebrate it with them. Yes pinilit. Actually this would be my 1st new year in 4 years that I am with company. I am used to celebrating it alone. My parents were busy abroad... para sa future ko. Yun naman lagi reason diba? I'm used to it. Besides December 31 is my birthday too... I celebrated it with them, actually ka-aalis lang nila to Seattle about 6 hours ago.
Fifteen minutes... tears started to puddle at the corner of my eyes on verged of its release with just one blink so I stared into his brown pools... trying to hold it back I tried deciphering his thoughts.
Miko and I have been together for 2 years now not including the times when were just mere friends. Currently 4th year college kami. He's taking up Management. Ako naman Interior Design. I am Gabby by the way. Gabrielle Dizon. (You'll know of her & their love story late as the story progresses.)
What did I do to deserve this guy. Staring at me like I am the most beautiful thing that God has ever created. It scares me. The way he looks at me. It scares me.
"Tell me something you're scared saying out loud." He urges me, cupping my chin forcing him to look at him...
"I love you, Miko." Absent-mindedly. These words escape my lips, almost a whisper.
Forcing his lips not to smile from ear to ear. as he rarely hear these three-words from me, he placed a soft peck against my lips.
"See that wasn't so hard after all." He says caressing my chin with the back of his hands. He's eyes still fixated on me. I am drowning.
"Idiot." Forcing a smile, I looked away hiding the pain visibly written in my face... I could not stare into those brown pools longer knowing what I am about to do.
"10...
9...8...
7...6...5...
4...3...2.........................HAPPY NEW YEAR!" Ignited inside the house.
Fireworks lit the sky. Painting it.
My heart was on frenzied beating.
As if it could explode into million pieces right now.
"Miko?" I can't help but stare at the profile of the man standing next to me with his eyes fixated on the beautiful sky but with his hands intertwined with mine.
"Hm?" He answered still not looking at me but with his lips curved into thin satisfied smile.
"Promise you'll always remember me." Dang it. How can I be so selfish.
The fireworks display has now ended. Miko is still holding my hand. Tighter this time.
"I can't promise that." I grimaced, looking at my feet now again fighting the urge to cry.
I now look at to him... now his eyes we're fixated on me.
"Don't make me promise that. People only ask you to remember them if they are planning to leave." He paused.
"If you're planning to leave please don't ask me to remember it. Like my father." He flatly stated avoiding my gaze. I know how he feels about person he cherish and love leaving. Even I had a hard time convincing him that I'll be back every now and then when I am taking a vacation abroad with my parents.
"I'm sorry." Tears now leaving my eyes. Miko hugged me.
"Don't cry, love. "
"I am really sorry. You know how those fireworks display always turn me emotional. They're just so beautiful. And I feel like... I feel like I wanted to be like them, remembered even though they passes by the sky for just 5 minutes , the feeling that lingers. I am not making any sense right?" I ranted.
"Happy New Year, love. It's always feels right to start a new year with you here. I can't wait for many more." Miko hugging me, chuckling, ignoring my rants.
"I love you, Miko." I hugged him back.
"I'm sorry." I added. Almost a whisper.
And with that, we get inside, joining his family.
Celebrating our 2nd New Year together and our 2nd year of being a couple.
And probably the last.
