The first thing I saw was darkness. There was nothing. Pitch black all around me and a strange humming in my ears. Hugging my knees tight, my vision remained black... yet the distant commotion became louder. The blurred noises became more distinct. I could begin to hear again...
Sirens, people screaming, the beeping of traffic. The sounds were deafening. It was chaos, and I didn't understand. I couldn't remember anything, where I was, what had happened. As my hearing grew more precise, I could make out more of the panic around me. My memory began to return...
I heard someone crying, sobbing quietly. My own heart was thumping, pounding away in my chest from nausea and fear. My head was still spinning. I wanted to be safe, at home, and I knew that the other person would like that too. It drove me to reach out and tell them: It's okay. It's gonna be okay. I opened my eyes, wishing to comfort them. Their crying was so awful, so heartbreaking. It's gonna be alright, we'll make it through this, I murmured.
As my vision was restored, I retched. The disorientation felt like too much, but I knew that I had to make it through this.
Sobbing, tears running down uncontrollably, I focused on what was in front of me. A shard of glass, a lot of coloured metal. I glanced around. More sounds of panic, more screams. I couldn't see anything but smashed materials. A tire, a steering wheel... an... engine? Remembering why I opened my eyes in the first place, I study my environment to find the crying child. Out of the corner of my eye, I spot her. Flipping onto my side I catch a glimpse... of a reflection in the glass. A tired, tortured girl, pinned to the ground by nothing but her own curse. I see the fear in her eyes. I feel her pain.
