JIN COULDN’T FOCUS.

It was his last class of the semester, and rather than pay attention to the professor’s parting words, Jin’s mind was focused on the rest of the day.

Specifically, his date with N.

Only N could do this to him. Only N could make an hour feel like days. Only N could capture Jin’s attention so wholly away from his schoolwork; though Jin knew how important his studies were, N could always take over, making him the most important thing in the moment.

Only N, whom Jin was so dedicated to, had this effect on Jin.

As the end of the hour approached, Jin’s foot began tapping in anticipation as he stole glances at the clock.

Okay, it’s 5:15. Only fifteen minutes until class is over. I can do this.

Forcing himself to pay attention, Jin appeared attentive for several minutes, even jotting down several small notes as his teacher lectured about what they should expect in the next semester. After ten minutes, though, Jin grew restless.

Just one...quick...peek. Just to reassure myself that the clock does, indeed, say 5:25, and that I only have five minutes left in here, and then I can leave…

He looked at the clock. 5:17?!

What the actual hell?

“Something you’d like to share with us, Seokjin?” His professor’s voice cut through his thoughts. Jin looked up, eyes wide, as everyone stared back at him, along with his instructor. Jin shook his head. “No, miss.”

His professor sighed. “See me when we’re done.”

Fuck.

For the rest of the lesson, Jin struggled as an internal war waged between paying attention to his professor and to the clock. Eventually, his professor stopped speaking. “Alright, that’s all I have to say. And wow, we finished five minutes early! You’re free to leave- have an excellent break, and see you in two weeks!”

As the rest of the class left, the professor called. “Seokjin.”

Hurriedly moving to the front of the room, hoping to get this over with, Jin rushed an apology. “I’m sorry for not paying attention today, miss; it’s just that today’s the last day, and I was getting sort of restless-”

“Seokjin,” the professor laughed, tucking her hair behind her ear. “You’re fine.”

“I- I am? Then why did you-?” Jin stammered, glancing at the door.

His professor shrugged. “I want to give you some advice. I will be quick, don’t worry.” She walked behind her desk. “You’re a good kid, Seokjin. Brilliant. Attentive. Yet you didn’t display that today.”

“I know, and I’m sorry-”

“Don’t be.” The professor smiled. “The reason why is obvious; I’ve seen it before in many a student, and I’ve felt it myself. Someone’s on your mind, isn’t that it?”

Amazed, Jin nodded. The professor grinned warmly. “Congratulations. Just remember to not let it consume you, alright? We all want to think our relationships will last forever, but that might not always be the case. Your relationship may end up being temporary, but your life will always be yours forever. So don’t define yourself by your relationship; define yourself by you.”

Jin nodded, soaking in her wise words. “Thank you, professor.”

“Not a problem. Just make sure to not curse at my clock in future lessons; not so loud, at least.” She laughed, and Jin couldn’t help but grin.

“Now run along and enjoy yourself, okay? I’ll see you in the fall.” She waved a goodbye, and he bowed quickly before turning and leaving. Thank goodness that’s done. She did make an excellent point, though…

Jin figured he would think about her wise words later; for now, he had a date to prepare for.

Double update today (this and next chapter) because I feel bad for what I have planned.
