Pippa sat at her desk in her room, nervously waiting for the video to finish uploading. She had someone record one of her performances for choir and she decided to post it online to see if people liked her singing. Her fingers rapidly tapped the wooden desk in front of her, her mind telling her to cancel it quickly before it could post, and at the same time to just let things happen.
"Dinner is almost done Pip." Her roommate said while tapping on her door.
"Alright. I'll be down in a few." She said while waving him off. The video was uploaded, and instantly she felt terrified. She was out on the Internet now... She took a deep breath in, knowing it would take a while before anyone would even dare to look at it. Her mind felt a little better considering that factor in her mind.
She had gone two weeks without checking the video. Her friends had seen it and applauded her talent, but she politely declined their comments, muttering that she wasn't that good. Of course, no one had brought up comments from online. No one ever thought to check them either.
She sat at home that night, aimlessly scrolling through, watching videos that made her laugh. She decided to check on the video she uploaded and saw it had a few views, a few likes. She smiled and scrolled down to the comment section...
'Her voice is okay. She looks weird tho'
'Why is that song still being sung by people. It's terrible. Especially when she sings it'
'Is she anorexic or something? Why did she even bother to post this. Is it for attention?'
'Someone should shove a sock in her mouth. Maybe that'll do the song some justice!'
She felt the tears pushing themselves out of her eyes. She knew that it was a cruel world out there, but she didn't think it was this cruel! Her fingers logged out of the account, logged out of her computer and shut the laptop. Her body dragged itself out of the desk chair and into her bed. She didn't know why she felt so terrible about it. She knew this would happen...
As she wandered the halls, making her way through to her class, she couldn't even look people in the eye. Everything was anonymous online, so she couldn't even tell if her own friends were the ones saying all of it...
The professor walked in, late as usual. She wondered why she even bothered to show up sometimes. It wasn't like this class was important to her anyway. It was just general education stuff. The boy that sat next to her always caught her attention, but today she didn't even want to show her face to the world.
"Hey you look down.." The boy frowned at her.
"Because I am looking down. I'm not looking up." Pippa said sarcastically. She was very sarcastic when upset.
"Well sorry I asked...." he scoffed. He felt as if she was upset, he had every right to feel that way about her. She was usually so cheery and full of life, but today she was putting off a tired and depressed vibe.
After a few days, her vibe stayed the same, the boy, Lin, thought of different ways to get her to talk. Of course he wouldn't always get an answer out of her, but he would get either a glare or a very, very small smile.
"Come on. You know you like this one." He laughed while drawing what looked like a bunch of lines. But he swore to her it was stick figures fighting. Both of them were partnered up for a presentation, but had finished all of their work by now.
"You can't do that." She smiled while taking the pencil from him. "It's like this." She said while drawing her own version of stick people, which were by far much better than his, on the papers.
"See you can smile." He said while lightly elbowing her in the side.
"Oh hush... I've been having a bit of a depressive state lately." She shrugged as if it was normal. Lin hadn't experienced anything like that before... Which both worried him and intrigued him.
"What does that mean?" He asked.
"Well... It means I was sad. But you got me out of it." She smirked. Lin laughed and took the pencil from her, continuing his terrible stick figures. "Thank you by the way." She murmured.
"You're welcome." He smiled. "What made you all upset in the first place?" He asked her.
"Just some mean comments online... I really shouldn't post videos of my singing online." She sighed while watching him doodle on their presentation papers.
"People online are dumb. The only people who have the right to critique you aren't even online anyway." He said casually. Pippa's eyes widened at his words, realizing he was right. She shouldn't have let it all come to this... "I think I saw that video too. It was really good. Your voice is amazing." He gave her a warm smile, actually looking at her and not at their papers.
"Thank you... I really don't think I'm great though." She laughed nervously.
"I think you're amazing. And real people comments should matter most. Not what some stranger who probably lives in a basement with his mom thinks." He rolled his eyes and made a little face to try and get her to laugh. Which worked well for him.
"You're really funny." She smiled. "And thank you. You're too much."
"I get that a lot." Lin laughed. "I have no chill whatsoever." He said proudly.
"That isn't something to be proud of Lin." She giggled.
"I think it is. Sometimes... By the way while we're on the topic of no chill... Would you like to chill with me sometime? And by that I mean just hang out and talk in a place other than this class." He laughed. Pippa nodded at him.
"I would love to 'chill' with you." She giggled. "Just promise you'll have some type of chill by then."
"That I can't promise."
