Ch. 11
| Noreen's pov |
Luke and I wait for his mom and he shows me around the house. It's a nice place, I much rather live here than in that house with my father. I hear the front door open; that must be Luke's mother. Luke and I go to the door and she looks confused.
"Luke, let's talk..." she says as she stares at me.
Luke doesn't hesitate and he goes into a room with his mother. I wait and I hear them murmuring. She must be wondering why I'm here and who I am. I twiddle my thumbs and look up every once and while to see if they're finished talking. I see some nodding, and shakes of heads, and soon they come back. Luke's mom looks at me with pity, I'm sick of that look.
"It's Liz." She says and she shakes my hand. "Nice to meet you Noreen."
It's not really nice to meet me, it's sad, but that's what everyone says.
"Well, I'll make dinner, and Noreen make yourself at home."
I can hear her voice cracking; she's about to cry, but she keeps it in. I pick up the suitcase Calum brought and walk upstairs with Luke behind me. We go into his room and I place the suitcase on the floor and I notice it's the one I packed to run away. I open it and it has everything I need, I was afraid if Calum packed it he would forget my feminine needs. I close it and sit on the floor.
"You can sleep in my bed, I'll sleep on the floor," Luke says.
I nod and zip open my suitcase slowly making sure I don't hurt my arm any more than it already is. Luke sits next to me and asks me to stretch out my legs. I do so and he looks at the bruises on my legs.
"That's it?" He asks.
I shake my head and lift up my shirt a little. He looks at the ones on my stomach and on my back.
"Maybe a shower would help you feel better," he tells me.
A shower would only sting, a bath would be better.
"A bath is fine," I answer.
Luke nods and goes into the bathroom. Soon I hear the running of water and he comes back out. The sun setting illuminates the room with a dark orange glow. I sit on the ground just thinking, how will my life turn out after this? Just staying here, I haven't even thought about getting a job. Mrs. Hemmings won't take me in. Luke sits beside me and the atmosphere changes. From sad, to calm. I could fall asleep right now, but I stay up anyway.
"After dinner, what would you like to do?" Luke asks.
"I would like to read a book, write, anything, go out and just walk, anything to help me forget," I answer.
"We can go on a walk..." Luke says.
I smile and I go into the bathroom. The water is at a decent level and I close the door. I take off my clothes and step inside the hot water. It feels good against my skin and I slunk in the tub. I put my hair in a high ponytail and just sit there. I forget everything for a while, and focus on how warm I feel. I skim my hand over the water and take my hair out of the ponytail. I slide deeper into the tub until I'm completely under. The water burns my face a bit but I don't mind. It helps me think of new things.
After a few seconds I bring myself back up and inhale deeply. I smooth back my hair and I can feel it knotting up. I put it in the ponytail again and I look around the bathroom. It's neat and tidy, which surprises me a little. I look further around, and I see broken glass on the floor. I look at the mirror and it doesn't have a single crack in it, then I see a dark figure staring back at me. He's eyes are completely black but shine in way, and his body is completely black too. It's a tall figure, but boney. It smiles a wicked smile and holds up a knife. It carves into the mirror "nice to meet you Noreen :)"
