"Mom! Adam took my book!" I shouted running into the kitchen where Mom was cooking dinner.

"Alissa. What did you do that made him take it?" Mom asked not even turning to look at me. I shrugged. "Alissa." Mom said my name forcefully.

"I guess I took his hoodie." I mumbled staring at the ground.

"Alissa. What have I told you about mumbling? You know I can't stand if when you mumble." My Mom said turning to look at me.

"I know Mom, but I couldn't help it. But anyway I said I took his hoodie." I said louder that way she could hear me.

"Give him the hoodie back. Adam you know better. You are 17 years old. And Alissa you should know better too. You are 15 years old now give him back the stupid hoodie." Mom said turning her back to me. "And You are both in trouble."

"Hey!" Adam exclaimed and Mom shrugged it off. We slowly walked up the stairs. "You shouldn't have taken my hoodie." Adam muttered once we were out of hearing range.

"Well you shouldn't have taken my book!" I exclaimed turning to face him.

"Hey! You took my hoodie first!" Adam said in disbelief. I walked into my room and got his hoodie out of the closet.

"Here's your stupid hoodie back." I said handing it to him in exchange for my book. "Friends again?" I asked.

"Sure, you little brat." He said pulling me into a hug. You see me and my brother were always close and we still are. Sure mom and dad don't believe that but hey it doesn't matter.

"You are the best brother in the world." I say pulling away from him.

"Is that why you took my hoodie? To tell me that? You know you could have saved a lot of time by just telling me." Adam said with a smirk. I punched his arm. Hard. "Hey!" He protested as I gave him a grin.

"Adam! Alissa! Come down here!" Dad shouted from downstairs.

I glanced at Adam and said, "Uh oh." He nodded as we turned and walked down the stairs. We came to a stop in front of him. "What's wrong?" I ask looking up at him.

"Nothing. For once. Today is your mother's and my anniversary. We are going out to dinner tonight. Adam you are in charge until we come back. No arguing, fighting, or parties. Got it?" Dad asked and we both nodded and then mom and dad left.

"I thought we were in trouble." Adam said sighing with relief.

"Yeah. I forgot that today was their anniversary." I said going in the kitchen. "Good. She fixed dinner. Grilled cheese. Do you want one?" I asked holding it out to him. "Hey. Let's eat in the living room and watch a movie." I suggested.

"I'm picking what movie we watch!" Adam shouted running into the living room.

"It better not be The Hunger Games!" I called.

"No. We are watching The Maze Runner!" He shouted back. About half way through the movie there was a knock at the door. I glanced at the clock it was 10:30. "Adam. Wake up. Shouldn't mom and dad be back?" I asked just as the person knocked again. He glanced at the clock.

"Yes. They should be. And go answer the door." He said closing his eyes as I get up and walked to the door.

"Sheriff Rafael! Oh god. What has happened? Is it Bella?" I asked worrying. My best friend has a tendency to get in trouble.

"No. Thank goodness. Is your brother home? I need you both to come with me. Something has happened." Sheriff Rafael said.

"Sure. Come in." I said turning to walk into the house. "Adam. Wake up. The Sheriff is here to talk to us." I say shaking his shoulder.

"What? Oh- hi Sheriff Rafael. What do we owe the pleasure?" Adam asked sitting up.

"Adam, Alissa. You all need to come with me. Your parents were in a car accident. They are in the hospital. You need to come with me now." The Sheriff said. Adam and I stood ready to go.

"Let's go." Adam said.

"Aren't you two going to get dressed? You are both in your p.j's." The Sheriff said.

"We do not care!!!!" I shouted running outside and getting into the cruiser with Adam right behind me. The Sheriff followed and we were on our way. "Adam. I'm scared. I don't want them to die." I said crying.

"I'm scared to Alissa. But they are going to live. They have to." Adam said, honestly he wasn't very convincing as he grasped my hand.

"Adam. Alissa. We are here. Do you want me to come with you?" The Sheriff asked. We nodded in unison. As the sheriff walked up to the nurses desk. I saw a doctor that looked like he knew something. I poked Adam and pointed at him. We started walking to him as the Sheriff began to shout at the girl behind the desk who wasn't paying attention.

"Excuse me. Could you help us?" I asked once we got there.

"That depends. But I might be able to." He replied looking at his charts.

"We are looking for our parents. I'm Adam Sinclair and this is my sister Alissa." Adam said and the doctor's eyes widened.

"Come with me now." He said and started walking down the hall and we followed him. He pushed open a door and we entered his office. "Sit. Please." He said waving a hand to the chairs.

Then, he says the words that will change our lives in a huge way. "I'm sorry to tell you this but I'm your parents doctor. Your father is in a coma. And your mother was a DOA victim. I'm so sorry." He said.

"What does DOA mean?" I asked when I was able to find my voice.

"Dead opon arrival. As I said I'm very sorry." The doctor said. I stood and took a step toward the door when things began to whirl, I sank to the floor where I was right in front of the door and began to cry.

"Alissa. It's going to be okay. Dad's going to be okay. He will wake up. He would never leave us alone without any body to help us. You know that too. Right?" Adam asked trying to comfort me.

"He wouldn't if he had a choice. But in this case he doesn't really have one. He promised to always be there for us. But so did Mom. But now she's gone. Do you think that he would be able to make it without her? I don't. I feel as if he's going to give up the fight. Mom was his life. We were just a part of it." I said through my tears.

I heard a someone calling my name then. And suddenly the door burst open slamming into my back. "Adam. Alissa. I'm glad I finally found you. They told me I wasn't allowed to be told any thing. Hey your eyes are bloodshot. Oh no. You received very bad news didn't you?" The Sheriff asked not even realizing that he had hit me with the door.

"Yes. Mother was a DOA victim and father is in a coma. They're are not sure if he will wake up. I think he will though. He has to." Adam replied before I could.

"I am so sorry. Alissa. I called Bella. She is on her way. She should be here soon. I'm sorry for your loss. Oh and I apologize for hitting you with the door." The Sheriff said. I shrugged as Bella walked in.

"Alissa! Are you okay?" Bella asked sitting down in the floor next to me and giving me a comforting

"I will be fine. Adam will be to. But mom is gone and dad's is in a coma. You know that the last thing mom said to us was 'your both in trouble'. That just makes me wish that I had been able to tell her I loved her. I didn't say it enough." I said getting comfort from her hug.
