chapter ten
❝ the turning point ❞҉ ҉ ҉
Rhena woke up, gasping for air. She coughed a little and turn to her side, holding her throat. It felt like she was burning, a fire that was ripping through and slowly consuming her from within. She clenched her fists tightly, until her knuckles turn white.
Rhena let out a deep breath and manage to come back to reality. Her hands began to shake and she blinked multiple times, opening her eyes.
Furrowing her eyebrows, she finally took a look around, noticing she wasn't in her room. It took her a couple of seconds to remember where she was and sighed heavily.
She sat down and put a hand on her face, trying to breath properly. Rhena looked at the alarm clock in the night stand and it surprised her. It was 5:16 am.
Rhena got up from the bed and slowly made her way out. She locked the door behind her and tried not to make too much noise as she went to her room. No one had to know she was there.
She was still the clothes from the day before, so she chose new ones. Then, she made her way to the bathroom and took a quick shower, hoping that the cold water could clear her mind.
After throwing her dirty clothes in the laundry basket, Rhena returned to her room. She took the hair brush and began to untangle her hair while looking in the mirror.
Once she was done, she turned around to the door to go downstairs, but stopped abruptly, releasing a breath. She looked under her bed, but and then at her sister, making sure she was asleep.
Rhena kneeled down and took out a red box with a symbol, the same one her relatives would take great pride on. The box was hidden, even though she had nothing of value there, but still felt the necessity to keep away. She opened it and moved around some things until she found what she was looking for.
The Bekker girl took the necklace in hand and put the box in its previous spot, making sure of putting something in front so no one wouldn't see it.
Rhena stood up and raised the necklace at the height of her face. She looked at it for a couple of seconds before moving to the mirror once again.
With her eyes locked in the gray oval crystal, she began to put it on. Once the chain was around her neck, she sighed. Rhena hid the necklace under her shirt, away from the wondering eyes.
She looked at her reflection in the mirror with a blank expression until her eyes couldn't take it anymore.
The necklace made her remember simpler times, putting it on would hopefully bring her the peace she so desperately needed. It would be a reminder that she wasn't alone.
