It was a tradition, Spring break at Julie's, Summer break at Zoe's and Halloween at Ellie's.
But this year, it's a bit odd.
As expected, it's a warm Tuesday night. Ellie wrapped herself with the cloak as Julie threw on the witch's hat. On the other side, Zoe slipped herself into the puffy dress.
Ellie sat down in front of the window and pushed her laptop open. Simultaneously, Julie reached towards the phone lying on her bed as Zoe picked her iPad up from the coffee table, alongside a chocolate frog.
Ellie: READY TO GO, GIRLS?
Julie: Yes ma'am
Zoe: Haha
Zoe: i think im high
Ellie:...
Julie: lol dw Zoe, me too
Ellie: tbh, who isnt?
Julie: yeah, you have a goof point
Zoe: good*
Julie: Im on phone okay?
Julie: well...
Zoe: well...
Ellie: I have a prob, guys
Zoe: whats wrong, Ellie?
Zoe: r u okay?
Zoe: Ellie?
Julie: Ellieeeeeee
Julie: Seriously, El, whats wrong?
Ellie: I might not be able to go...
Zoe: WHT?!
Julie: You HAVE to be kidding!
Ellie: im not joking, jul
Ellie: im not sure if i can go anymore.
Zoe: Why? El, tell us!
Ellie: there's this problem with my English story, more than half of the document was deleted?
Zoe: NO WAY, U MUST BE KIDDING
Ellie: I wish i am...
Julie: Awwww....when is it due?
Ellie: Tomorrow first period...
Julie: oh no...
Ellie: it was 6000 words. :(
Ellie: the weird thing is, it's the first half thats gone, not the way you would expect if u forgot to save it
Zoe: have u tried recovering it...?
Zoe: Halloween would be no fun without u!
Julie: El?
Zoe:...oh my, she dropped us again
Julie: are u trynna say she dropped her laptop twice?
Zoe: No, like, dropping our conversation, Jul
Julie: Oh right, haha
Ellie:...
Zoe: did it work?
Zoe: please say yes...
Ellie: ...
Julie: ...?
Ellie: ...no
Julie: Oh Ellie, im so sorry...
Zoe: well r u going?
Ellie:...
Ellie: you know what
Zoe:...what
Ellie: look im just gonna ditch the hw and go trick or treating anyways
Julie: YES!
Zoe: YES ELLIE!
Ellie: :)
Ellie: R.I.P. my dear eng hw
Zoe: haha
Julie: Im getting picked up very soon, be at ur house in 20min.
Zoe: I still need to wait for my mum to finish school so i might take a bit longer.
Ellie: sure thing, see u then.
"So......" Ellie greeted with a double-chin smirk. "Julieeee....the creepy witch, hey?"
"That sound weird," Julie turned around as she waved goodbye to her parents.
"Have fun, Jul, we will pick you up at 9pm!" was Mrs Jennifer's loud reminder coming from the rolled-down windows.
"It's a shame it's on a Tuesday, yeah?" Ellie shrugged as they walked down the driveway. Julie nodded in agreement, holding her purple basket and wand.
"One sec," Julie paused, grabbing Ellie by her shoulder. Ellie looked over, confused. "Oh dear Ellie, I'm taller than you!"
"What a surprise..." Ellie responded with a dull sing-song voice. "I TOTALLY didn't see that coming..."
"Is that sarcasm?"
"If you want it to be."
"Haha, I see, you're now jealous 'cause I'm taller than you, right?" Julie winked, she kicked up her leg (she does gymnastics) and touched her nose. "Ha!"
Ellie raised an eyebrow. They stared at each other for a few silent seconds and then crackled into laughter.
"Having a good laugh without me?" Zoe complained as she sashayed down the driveway. But before her best friends can reply, she soon lost her sassiness and caught the giggles. "Oh yeah, nothing better than a good laugh."
