I shiver hard as another gust of wind blew against me. My body was moving slower than I wanted but at least I was moving. From how cold it was and how much snow there was around I knew we were up high in the mountains. I just had to head downhill to find help. The snow was up to my knees as I stumbled over a rock. My feet were numb and it didn't help that I couldn't feel anything but pain.
'Logan, please find me.' I mentally thought. I didn't know how far away I was from the pack but I had a sinking feeling that I may freeze before I get anywhere close to the base of the mountain.
In the dark came a snapping of twigs. I froze in place and looked around. It was funny, I could see clearly in the dark to as before I couldn't. There, off to the left of me, was a white wolf or maybe it was just covered in snow. We just stood there watching each other. She didn't look mean and she didn't look like she was a werewolf either.
She sniffed the air and turned. After taking a few steps, she turned her head and looked at me. Was she waiting for me? I followed her as she led me through the woods. I was surprised that she would let me follow her, but I think she knew I was in trouble.
When we came to a place where there were loads of bushes, she slipped between two and disappeared. Was this the entrance to her den? I pushed the bushes to the side and found a hole. I slipped in and was surprised at the warmth of the little den. Then I saw them, three pups all sitting together behind their mother.
I kept my distance from them not wanting to anger mama wolf. But one of the smaller ones padded over to me and snuggled into my lap. Then the other two followed. Their warmth felt nice and the weight of them, oddly, gave me comfort. Then mama wolf walked over and sat between me and the entrance to the den.
"Thank you." I shivered out. "You most likely are saving my life."
"Wolves have to stick together, my dear." A sweet voice echoed the den. I gasped and looked around. "Do not fret my dear, rest and sleep. You have a long journey ahead of you."
The voice came from the wolf! She looked at me with kind eyes and I felt comforted. I felt my body relax and slowly fell asleep. Just a few hours wouldn't hurt. When I wake, I'll head out.
I felt a nudge on my face and slowly opened my eyes. It was the smaller pup. His tail wagged and he gave my cheek another lick. I smiled and gave him a few pats before a smell floated to my nose. I looked down and there sat on a small blanket a plate of cooked fish with protein bars.
"You'll need to keep up your strength. Eat, it is still warm." Mama wolf said before shooing her pups away from the fish. For a split second I wondered where she had gotten this, but then my stomach growled and I dug in. I decided to eat one protein bar and save the other three for the journey back to the pack.
"Now there is a threat near. You must be quick if you wish to stay free. Don't stop, keep moving." Mama wolf said watching her pups play with a twig. "Be safe."
"Thank you so much for everything. I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't come along." I say looking at her. It was still dark out, but I could see her clearly. She had to be the most beautiful wolf I had ever seen. "I don't know how to repay you."
"You'll find a way." She said knowingly and it made me wonder if she could read the future. I said my final thanks and squeezed back into the cold. It was no longer snowing and I felt uneasy being out in the open. They would be able to track me better now so I had to book it. Mama wolf had pointed me off to the left, saying there was a village there.
I trudged my way through the knee-high snow wishing I could have stayed in the den the rest of the night. But I knew just staying there would put her and her pups at risk and I couldn't let anything happen to them. My parents wouldn't have wanted it for me. I had thought about them a lot since being kidnapped.
