This is mostly an explanation chapter, just FYI

~Jeremy's POV~

"Kai's the reason you're all in this mess," Francie said, tapping the paper and closing the folder. I gave a confused start, Michael gasped, and Melanie raised her eyebrows.

"Kai? But why would Kai do something like that?" Melanie rasped, crossing her arms skeptically.

"Look, I don't know this dude, and he does look pretty suspicious, but I'm not searching for a scapegoat. What evidence do you have behind your accusation?" snapped Michael. "I'm not gonna blame some random person put in front of me just because a stranger tells me he did something. I've had my experience with strangers. I don't even know you; why should I trust you?"

Francie huffed quietly and snatched up the picture once more, adjusting her glasses with a grunt. "I'm not simply blaming him blindly! I know exactly what happened. Also, you can trust me completely. We've met before," she shot back, glancing at Michael. He tilted his head to the side and eased his hand over mine, intertwining our fingers cautiously.

"What "evidence" do you have?" I spoke up, shooting a glance at the folder in her arms. She took a deep breath, as if preparing for a speech.

"You all don't really know Kai, but he's a huge flirt. Really tries to get all the ladies. Obviously, it doesn't really work, but at least he tries," Francie sighed amusedly, clapping a hand to her forehead. "Anyway, he often floats from one girl to the next, pretending to have a crush on them when he really just wants to hide his true feelings." She turned to Melanie, resting her hand on the other girl's shoulder.

"Ever since you joined the Academy, Mel, Kai's had the hots for you. That's all he would talk about. Melanie this, Melanie that, oh, doesn't Melanie make me swoon. Of course, when he realized that you actually listened to school-wide gossip, he covered it up by pretending to be crushing on me. He figured you wouldn't approach him directly if he pretended to be chill. We went out for a while until I realized that he was still focused on you. Although, before we split, he made the unfortunate mistake of giving me his credentials; you know, phone number, credit card number, Snapchat password, stuff like that. I was able to track his progress over social media and eventually discovered that he was taking special care to look through the Mell family history. Of course, I worried about you, so I followed him through his research. It wasn't long before he found both of your Instagram accounts, then he proceeded to hack them both."

"Wait, so he's been watching my conversations over Instagram?" Michael exclaimed bewilderedly, his hand flying to his pocket protectively. Francie nodded quickly, ignoring the incredulous look upon Michael's face. I tried not to break a smile and returned my attention to Francie, who was continuing on.

"He found a conversation in which Melanie discussed her ever-growing crush on a kid named Jeremy Heere, and became instantly obsessed with figuring out who he was. At this point, we'd broken up, but I was still following him. He tracked the name to Middle Borough, where he figured out the relationship between his now-rival and his crush's brother. He started to stalk you two by pretending to be a new student, one who was mysteriously in all of your classes. He found out about Michael's little crush on the very same person, and then everything clicked in his brain. He developed a plan that had to do with the bonding trip, which he'd bribed the school board into creating. Adults will do anything for money and power sometimes.

"Anyway, while he was wasting his time trying to figure out his clever plot, I was already one step ahead of him. I'd found all three of you and connected the dots, and I realized that I was probably the only thing that stood in the way of his plan. I pretended to approach him blindly with only the gossiped information that spread between each hallway and asked to be recruited, and thankfully he took the bait. I was given clear instructions to get a photo with which I could easily adjust to use as blackmail; the lone moment with Michael and Christine was perfect. There wasn't much that I could do to avoid the picture, so I coughed it up and earned some extra cash. After that, I took a day to pull some strings and catch your phone number, Michael; unfortunately, Kai saw my plan and stole my own phone, then used it to scare you. I didn't realize and continued with my work, eventually getting in contact with you. I then realized how screwed over I'd become, and I quickly formed a plan to fix it. I watched you, and I'll say it was an agonizing process, and I eventually found a way that you may have been able to fix it. Although, I did run into a bit of an issue. Kai was watching a live feed of Jeremy's house, and he was trying to intercept anything that would halt his plan."
