Halloween

I know it's passed halloween. Shut up.

Pat jumped out from his hiding spot, making Logan jump, dropping his phone in the process. "Patton, why do you insist on... What are you wearing?" Logan looked his friend up and down, whilst Pat just stood smiling. "It's Halloween, Lo. You gotta dress up!" Logan thought for a second.

"But aren't you supposed to dress as something scary or spooky? A cat fits neither of those descriptions." Pat rolled his eyes and sighed. However, as he was about to argue his point, Roman burst in, holding a colourful flier in one hand and the sleeve of a tired Virgil in the other. "Look! Look at this! We've got to do this!" Roman exclaimed, thrusting the flier in Logan's face. Lo ripped it out of his hand, frustrated, and they looked at the bold writing at the top of the paper.

'Costume Contest Tonight!

Best Couples Costume Wins Free Pizza For Life From (generic pizzaria)!'

Roman squealed. Virgil rolled his eyes. Pat's smile widened. Logan groaned. The paper did nothing. It was paper.

"But none of us are 'couples'. How can we take part in this competition?" Logan asked, hoping to remove the ridiculous idea from the royal's mind. Roman thought for a second. "Pat, you go with Logan. Virge, you're coming with me." He took off, dragging a worried Virgil along with him. Virgil and Logan shared a terrified glance.

An hour later, Roman was pacing his room, frustratedly thinking. Virgil watched, sitting cross-legged on the bed, shifting slightly within the silken sheets. Roman pointed to the large whiteboard which was covered in writing, most words crossed or scribbled out. He motioned towards one of the many refused ideas. "What's wrong with this one?" Virgil rolled his eyes, lifting an eyebrow.

"Sun and moon? Really Princey?" He shook his head as Roman attempted to argue his point, giving up after a few seconds. "How about Peter Pan and Wendy?" Ro asked, writing the new idea on the board. It was quickly crossed out as Anx shook his head. "I'm not wearing a dress or tights, Ro." Roman groaned, putting the whiteboard pen down on a nearby desk.

Virgil stood up, walking towards the door. "And where are you going?" Roman called after him, hands on his hips. "Coffee break. We're gonna be here for a while. Want anything?" Virgil replied, not slowing as Roman followed him to the kitchen. As they entered the room, Pat and Logan looked up from their seats at the table, lowering their mugs. "You guys taking a break too?"

Logan sighed, looking towards Virgil as the younger grabbed two mugs from the shelf. "It is almost impossible to find some sort of costume which would fit both of our individual tastes." He sighed, Patton doing the same. "Tell me about it. All Doctor Gloom wants to do is go back to his room!" Virgil's expression changed as he got a great idea. He mentally facepalmed. How hadn't he thought of it before? He grabbed Roman's sleeve, leaving the cups behind and dragging the confused Prince to his dark and gloomy room. Logan and Patton watched them go. However, as the sound of a shutting door echoed down the corridor, Logan thought about what Roman had said. 'Doctor?' He mouthed, suddenly jumping up and almost running to his room to write on his own whiteboard of ideas. Patton followed, surprised by the sudden reaction, carefully carrying the two mugs of unfinished coffee to the room and closing the door with his foot.

That night, Roman and Virgil strolled up to the large door at the front of the venue. Roman looked over at Anx, who was looking slightly nervous. "You ready?" Virgil nodded, taking a deep breath. "Let's do this." He smiled, which Roman returned and they both looked forward, walking to the door.

It was surprising that neither had thought of Jack Skellington and Sally until they got to Virgil's room, especially as they both loved the movie. Virgil's pinstripe suit and pale foundation actually went very well with the purple hair that he couldn't be bothered to dye. His dark foundation had doubled in thickness and Roman's help with the classic smile helped it look very accurate. He had even hand-made a pointed cat bow tie that looked like he could have pulled it out of the movie. He pulled on his skeleton gloves and looked over at Roman, who had a huge grin across his face.

They had come to an agreement that the Prince didn't have to wear a dress, instead using old clothes and shreds of material to create a suit that matched Sally's patchwork theme. He had insisted on the perfect shade of pale blue, which took about an hour to create, and had even dyed his hair a slightly reddish brown. For accuracy, he had also insisted on keeping a small sewing kit in his pocket, 'just incase', to which Virgil had rolled his eyes, not bothering to object. He had asked Virgil to paint his nails and, surprisingly, the other had accepted, seemingly enjoying the company for once.

Overall, both of them looked stunning.

As soon as they entered the large hall, the quiet of the outside turned into chaos in costume. They came face-to-face with Buzz and Woody's, Jack and Rose's, Cosmo and Wanda's, Mary Poppins and Bert's and hundreds of other recognisable costumed characters. A Matt Smith Dr. Who walked up to them, quickly followed by a TARDIS. Or, more preferably, a nerdy Logan and a Patton in a onesie. "Salutations. I see you were able to solve your costume issue, as were we." They could tell that, even behind his unmoving monotone facial expression, he was squeeing like a... Patton, at being able to cosplay as one of his favourite things ever.

They all spent a few hours in the hall, having a snack or a drink or just talking to people about their amazing costumes. Three hours later, the announcer stepped up to the microphone. "Ladies and Gentlemen! Can I have your attention, please?" Everything was silent.

"I am incredibly proud and amazed to look out at all of you and your astounding costumes. And I am very happy to announce that our judges have made a decision. The winner of the couple's costume contest is..."

You could cut he tension with a knife.

Virgil felt Roman's hand slip into his own. It squeezed. He squeezed back.

"JACK SKELLINGTON AND SALLY!!!" The announcer shouted, pointing straight at them. Everybody cheered. The announcer motioned for them to come up on stage. Virgil looked over at Roman who's face mirrored his own. "Shall we?" Virge asked, pointing to the stage. Roman nodded, too excited for words. As they stepped on the stage, they looked out over the large crowds of people who were cheering and clapping. Then there was Patton, who was crying with joy and screaming excitedly into Logan's ear.

Virgil had never smiled so much in one day. After all four had left the venue, they went to the nearest pizzaria to collect their spoils (free pizza for life) and later watched The Nightmare Before Christmas. He didn't know when they had stopped holding hands but by the middle of the movie, Virgil had started to miss the warmth of Roman's hand squeezing his own. Maybe they were simply meant to be...
