His jaw came unhinged as he eyed me shamelessly.
"I suggest you close your mouth before any more shit goes in or out" I patted his cheek as I spoke.
A deep throaty laugh came from behind him but it was cut short when my mother decided to slap the owner of the laugh in the head.
James cleared his throat as he pushed his son aside. "Sorry Leanne, you'll have to excuse Connor today... and every other day"
"It's fine, I'm sorry too."
Eh not really.
"I get cranky after flights" I explained with a laugh.
He leads me inside the house and I am starstruck with awe. It was stunning. The kitchen and dining room sat to the left and the living room occupied the rest of the floor space. The kitchen was filled with the most up-to-date equipment and was sparkling brightly as if it had just been polished. The dining room was a simple yet modern and appealing set. A colourful vase of flowers stood proudly on top of the table and greeted us.
Like the outside, the main colour scheme was black and white but they had a lot of different complementary colours.
I carefully slipped off my shoes as my eyes greedily looked around, trying to memeorise every minute detail.
My feet padded softly against the hardwood floors as I made my way around, almost like I was in a daze. There were a small set of stairs leading to the actual living area. A decorative rug sat below a glass coffee table.
The couches took up more than half of the living area and were accesorized with throw pillows varying with shades of grey. The rug tickled the toes as my hand lazily danced across the furniture, feeling the different textures under my manicured fingertips.
The tv hung on the wall above the fireplace. It was no doubt expensive considering the size. This place is surely intimidating as hell.
"Well I hope you approve of your new home Lea, I know it is a bit of an adjustment but I'm sure you will familiarise yourself in no time." James, although he spoke confidently, the way he gripped my mother's hand told me otherwise.
I smiled so brightly that my cheeks started to ached. "I'm sure I will too. This is amazing James."
His grip loosened and the blood came rushing back into his fiance's fingers. She shot me a gracious smile.
"You must be feeling a little tired, let me show you to your room."
I nodded and followed them up the steps hidden in the corner of the house.
There were two different corridors on either side of the steps on the second level.
I think I am going to need a map for this place. I lose my mother in the grocery how am I supposed to memorize this place, I thought.
On the right side, the corridor lead to the master bedroom where they would be staying he explained. On the left side, the corridor lead to Connor's bedroom as well as mine. There were two doors on either side and one in the middle. James turned to the one on the right and opened the door.
I stepped in the room and was completely mesmerised. The room was painted in different shades of blue and the floor was white marble. The furniture matched perfectly in a blue and white scheme. To my right was a sitting area with a white sofa, two bean bags, a small coffee table and a small flat screen mounted on the wall. To my right was a basic study area, with a desk, chair and lamp.
There is a dresser and mirror against the wall that are facing two doors on the left. A bathroom and a small closet. The queen-sized bed stood in the middle complete with two nightstands on either side. Windows by the bed faced the beach directly and there was a very small area where I could sit to admire the view all day long.
My mother and I did live comfortably in a penthouse back home but this was a new experience. It was a bigger than my old room without a doubt but it was not as intimating as I imagined. It looked cozy and simple. My mom played a part no doubt.
Caught up in the admiration of my new room and thoughts, I didn't notice them leaving until the quiet click of the door sounded.
I rolled up my sleeves determinedly and got to work. I dragged my suitcase to the sofa and unzipped it. After packing away a few of my belongings, I noticed that it was missing. I turned the suitcase inside out until I was certain. I bolted through my door without another thought.
"Mom?!" my voice echoed through the house.
"Downstairs" a slightly muffled voice answered.
I scampered down the stairs in record time and entered the kitchen. Thankfully she was alone.
"I can't find it" fear laced my tone as my voice faded away.
"Your makeup bag?" she asked a little worried for my mental being. I nodded silently.
"Did you pack it?" I nodded again and she continued "Did you take it from the plane before we left?"
My body froze and I buried my head into my hands.
"Oh Lea, honey, maybe it's for the best. It has been a year since..." she stopped when I raised my gaze to meet hers, tears filling my eyes to the brim.
"I'm not ready yet mum." She didn't say anything else, her arms snaked around me, engulfing me in a hug.
"How about we go to the mall after you shower?" She proposed and I smiled half heartedly in return. I returned to my room to do just that.

I left the ensuite with my towel wrapped securely around my body as little droplets fell around me.
My heart stopped and I was almost certain I could've had a heart attack when I noticed Connor laying on my bed like he owned it.
"Shit, you scared me," I took a minute to catch my breath as he watched in amusement. That asshat. I narrowed my eyes.
"I'm taking you to the mall instead, get dressed. Oh by the way nice tampons. Explains your pissy attitude today." he smirked. Only then did I realise that he was going through my bag.
I groaned in frustration and shoved him outside of my room.
Can't believe this idiot is going to be my stepbrother. Thanks mom.
I pushed aside all thoughts, no matter how annoying, and got dressed.
