Chapter 10

I awoke with a start. Zeke tried to pull me in closer to him, but I rolled away getting up. I went to my purse and dug around to find a ponytail holder. Ugh, my curly red hair sometimes tries to choke me. My hand hit something wooden. It was the cube, we’d found under my bed. I pulled the silver princess ring, and pink envelope out. I slid the ring on my left ring finger. The ring appeared to be sterling silver, with a small fire stone setting. The ring actually matched my necklace. Now all I need is the earrings I thought giggling. I opened the envelope, and pulled a card out. Happy Sweet Sixteen was wrote on the cover in pink cursive.  A teddy bear holding multicolored balloons adorned the front. I opened the card and read the inside.

Dear Adena,

Happy Sweet Sixteen! I’m so proud of you Baby Girl! This is a special ring, to match your necklace. You should always wear it. It will help you control your ability, and protect you. I love you.

Love, Mom.

I started to tear up thinking about my mom. She was still able to reach me beyond the grave. I miss her so much.

“What’s wrong Adena?” Zeke said. He was now awake, and looking adorably rumpled. I glanced at the living room clock. It was eleven a.m.

“Nothing, I was just thinking about my mom. It’s almost lunch time, and I’m about to starve. Do you want to go get lunch?” I asked.

“Sure, Do you want to go off campus, or to the cafeteria?”

“I think it’d be nice to eat in the cafeteria. I’d like to meet some more people. I’m sure they’re not all rotten like Alex, and Shelley.” I replied.

I grabbed my purse, and we walked to the cafeteria. There were so many serving bars to choose from. I walked into the salad bar line and waited to my turn. A girl around my age, with long curly chestnut hair walked up behind me. I decided to take a chance and introduce myself.

“Hey, I’m Adena. I’m new here. What’s your name?” I asked her.

“Hey, my name is Noelle. You can call me Elle though. All my friends do. I don’t know what my parents were thinking when they name me Noel. Anyway, So how do you like our school?” She said cheerfully chattering away.

“Its different that’s for sure.” I said grabbing a container of pudding from the end of the serving line.

“Do you want to come sit with us?” She asked.

We walked over to a round table in the corner with two other students sitting at it.

Noel sat down next to a slender boy with brown scraggly hair.

“You guys, this is Adena. She’s new here. This is Rye sitting next to me and Brian sitting beside you. We’re all freshmen. So hopefully we’ll have some classes together!”

I nodded to the boys, and began to eat my salad. I can’t get over the feeling that this is all fake, and Ashton Kutcher is going to walk out and tell me I’ve been PUNK’D… I felt a warm figure sit down beside me. I knew without looking it was Zeke. Only he could radiate that warmth. He’s golden inside, and out. We probably needed to talk about that now that I think of it. I looked up, because the whole table went quiet. Noel’s mouth was wide open in shock. Flies could’ve flown in, and she wouldn’t have noticed.

“What?” I asked.

“That’s Zeke!” Noel hissed at me.

Okay now I’m confused. Why is she telling me that’s Zeke, when obviously I have eyes for myself. I swallowed my lettuce. “Um yep, that’s him.” I said looking at Zeke.
