"I'm so glad I found you! Don't you ever run away from me again!" Ayaka yelled in Nana's ear. She was shaking with anger yet also deep fear for her sister's safety.
"You don't understand! There was a girl-"
"Don't you go making excuses, I know your lies," Ayaka scolded, hugging Nana close. She was afraid to let her go, as if she'd vanish into thin air if she didn't hold her tight enough.
"We need to run now, she's coming!" Nana exclaimed, pointing behind her. Ayaka looked back, the colour flushing from her cheeks. What was that...that thing scampering closer and closer to them? The dark and unearthly silhouette, of what looked to be a girl dragging herself along on her elbows, passed under a lamp-post. Under the light, Ayaka saw its scary features, and her face turned as white as a sheet. Whatever it was, it wasn't human.
"Ayaka?" Nana whispered, trying to swallow the lump in her throat.
"Nana... Run."
They dashed down the road, as fast as they could. Sweat formed on their forehead, and their expression showed nothing but fear. Nana glanced back for a split second and saw the thing coming closer and closer to them, about a few yards back. But for some reason, she could hear her coming as if she was only a foot away from her...
Tek Tek... Tek Tek....
"FASTER NANA, RUN!" Ayaka yelled, yanking on her arm as she noticed her sister was looking back distractedly. They ran like crazy, speeding down the lamp-lit streets and rushing past buildings. Soon, they were as far away as possible, panting and tomato red in the face.
Ayaka's cheeks had definitely regained their colour.
"Y-you saved us, N-Nana. We-well done," Ayaka stuttered, her heart thumping wildly in her chest. Drops of perspiration were growing on their hairlines, dripping onto the cold, hard ground. Nana sighed, wiping the sweat away with her sleeve.
"We need to hide. M-monster is still searching," she said, furrowing her eyebrows as she thought carefully. They were silent for a minute, before one broke the silence.
"A high building. The lower half of her... Blood was gushing out... And she ran on her elbows but... She was too fast. I'm certain she can't climb," Nana said, gazing up at her older sister. Ayaka nodded and took her hand, dragging her along behind her.
"And what she did to that boy back there....." Nana trailed off, letting her sister carry her along while staring at the blurry scenery around her. But her big sister wasn't listening.
They walked around the streets for what seemed like ages, taking small breaks to steal a snack from a small corner-shop or rest on a bench. Eventually they came across a tall, empty building.
The door was slowly rotting away, tiny insects eating at the wood and crawling over every cranny of it. Jagged shards of glass poked through the so-called windows, ready to cut anything that touched it. The building looked very creepy, and stood out from the rest of the scenery. There were always abandoned buildings here and there, but this one was definitely the creepiest. It reminded Nana of a haunted house.
"Don't touch the glass," Ayaka warned, shaking her finger at Nana, who nodded reluctantly.
Inside was completely bare, stripped of everything inside it. No furniture, no anything. The girls took in the sight around them. Suddenly, a small thud came from upstairs. Ayaka glanced at Nana, who looked back at her, an unsettling feeling resting in the pit of her stomach.
"Stay here," Ayaka ordered with authority.
Slowly, she climbed the uneven stairs. They and creaked beneath her weight, as if threatening to collapse. Preparing herself for the worst, she proceeded to walk up the stairs. The noise got louder as she neared the spot the sound was coming from.
Butterflies flew in her stomach, sweat pattering on the ground as it fell from her red face.
This was it. What was she going to discover?
All of a sudden, Ayaka burst through the door. And in the corner, was a small, pale girl munching at a half-eaten sandwich. The girl had two long, black ponytails. She sat with her back facing her.
"Wh-who are you?" Ayaka whispered, gasping at the sight. Shocked, she couldn't move. She was frozen to the spot. Who was this girl? Is she dangerous?
The girl whipped around, startled by her presence. She stared at Ayaka as the moonlight and streetlights streamed through the broken window beside her, making her blue eyes shimmer under the light. Ayaka could've sworn she'd seen that girl somewhere, but where? For the little girl it was the same.
"I'm Naomi."
