"My name is Naomi."

Ayaka hesitated before replying, "And my name is Ayaka." Naomi, she thought. What a pretty name.

Naomi smiled warmly. "Nice to meet you," she said. "Ayaka." She rose to her feet, dropping the sandwich, and held out her hand expectantly.

Ayaka shook her hand and they smiled warmly at one another.

"So, what're you doing here all alone, Naomi?" She asked out of curiosity.

Naomi twirled her hair nervously. "Well, you see..." She began, trailing off and gazing out the window. Ayaka made a gesture for her to go on.

"I.....ran away..." Naomi confessed, as if worried what she would think about her.

"We did too." Ayaka admitted, smiling sympathetically.

"We.....?" Naomi asked.

"Oh, I have a little sister down stairs." Ayaka explained, pointing in the direction of the stairs. "She's about nine, and her name is Nana."

Nana sat in a grimy and moldy corner downstairs, hugging her knees. She looked around her. This had to be some kind of an apartment building. Or something... How old was this building anyway? The paint was peeling off the walls, and dirt and grime filled every corner. It was a complete mess.

Nana looked at the slightly cracked open door they had came through. It wouldn't shut all the way, and the unsettling feeling never left her. She stood up and looked outside a window, being careful not to get too close to the glass. Her eye was hit with a bright gleam of the lamp-post nearest her. She searched the streets looking through the small space of the window. Her blurry vision couldn't make out the detail of it all. All she saw were blurry buildings and streetlights lining the street, their light glaring into her eyes.

Nana huffed with slight impatience and moved to the door, opening it a little more and peeking out the gap. She saw the same blurry scenery, she couldn't make out any silhouette without having to narrow her eyes and try her hardest. She looked to her right and to her left, no monster. But, why could she hear it moving??

Teke....teke...teke. ...

Nana's uneasiness turned into fear. Where was it? She leaned out the doorway a little bit more and scanned the area, feeling like a lookout for her sister. Where was she again, anyway? No, she needed to stay focused and alert about her surroundings!

Tek...teke...tek...

There it was again! But when she looked still no monster! Nana slid back all the way inside, her head spinning, she attempted to close the door all the way but it only squeaked in reply and bounced back open. Oh well. She sat in the corner again, trying to calm herself down. Maybe she was hearing things...

"So why'd you run away, Naomi?" Ayaka asked, sitting next to her in front of the window. The moonlight illuminated their faces in the dimly lit room.

"I ran away because...." Naomi trailed off. She looked at Ayaka, who was looking at her expectantly.

Naomi took a deep, shaky breath. Then, she buried her face in the sleeves of her school uniform. She hugged her legs tighter and began to cry. Ayaka looked surprised, and quickly patted her knee gently, trying to calm her down. "It's okay." Ayaka said in a soothing voice. "It's going to be alright."

Naomi sniffled, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.

"I was abused at home." She confessed. Ayaka looked at her with a sad expression, feeling bad for her.

"And the kids at school never liked me," Naomi added with a sigh.

"They teased me and bullied me."

Ayaka thought back to earlier that day, Naomi sure did look like that girl her and Nana saw on the school grounds.

Nana....

Ayaka stood up. "I'm sure Nana's waiting for us downstairs!" She said. "I'm gonna go check on her..."

"Don't leave me!" Naomi exclaimed, grasping her wrist before she could take a step forward. Ayaka looked back at her, having been caught off guard.

"I'm scared of the dark..." Naomi stated, looking at her pleadingly. "I came in here because it was chilly outside. And I'm also scared to be alone!"

She's scared of the dark and she hates being alone, Ayaka thought. But she still decides to run away.

"Would you like to come with us?" She asked. Naomi nodded violently, and Ayaka took her hand and helped her up. "Don't worry, we'll take care of you." Ayaka assured her with a smile. "Nana and I are a team, you'll like being with us."

"Where is this Nana?"

"She's downstairs still, hopefully," Ayaka answered, walking out the door. They both descended the stairs as it creaked beneath their feet. But Nana was gone.

"Nana?" Ayaka called. "Nana? Are you there?" Dread coiled in her stomach. No no, not again!

"Oh no....Nana! WHERE ARE YOU?!" She bounded the rest of the way downstairs, Naomi on her heels. She burst through the door to see Nana in the middle of the street.

"WHERE ARE YOU?!" Nana yelled to the top of her lungs, circling around the deserted street. "I know you're there!" She kept scanning the area for something. "I can hear you from a mile away, damn it!"

"Nana...." Ayaka murmured, confused. Then alarm rang through her, and anger. She tightened her fist and gritted her teeth. What was she doing?! Yelling in the middle of the street like that?!
