Chapter Five: Bloody buddies

It was evening, Will´s brown locks glistened in the faint sunlight.  Will picked up his coat and started for the hospital exit, he had managed to gather enough guts throughout the day and had finally decided to get acquainted with the night-life of Newbury. He was determined to find at least one fellow vampire on whom he could blame the death of the candy girl.

He started walking on the road, suppressing his fear and checking out grimy lanes. He came upon a lot of hobos, but not one person who could pass as a vampire; they were easy to pick out. Being lifeless, vampires’ didn´t have a heart-beat, while humans´ heart sounded like a mallet bashing on their eardrum. Also unlike him, most vampires were not practically destitute.

He was getting closer to his apartment and was thinking about retiring as it was almost midnight. He decided to check out one last street. He walked out of the illuminated circle made by the lamp post into the darkness. He spotted a man walking almost gracefully towards him, astoundingly Will couldn´t hear his heartbeat, not even a faint sound. He charged towards the chap only to see him doing the same.

Will wanted to twirl and escape, but this was a prospect to get him out of the guilt he had been putting himself into. The man hurled himself at Will with colossal strength, managing to make them hurtle right under the lamp post.

¨What the hell? ¨ both Sam and Will screamed in bewilderment as their faces were lit up by the lamp. ¨Right under my nose…¨Sam muttered.

¨You are um, a..?¨Will inquired unintelligibly. Sam replied cheerily ¨ What? A blood sucking, hot but dangerous, quite mysterious vampire? Yes, I am.¨

Will saw something shift in the darkness, though anxious, he wasn´t going to let the world know that he was a blood-sucker like the dim-wit next to him. Will sauntered into the darkness once again, but he was pulled back by Sam clutching on his neck.

¨Don´t even think about escaping, I am not letting a perverse murderer like you run around killing little girls.¨ Sam accused.

Will hesitated, then responded ¨ I saw something in the dark. Anyway I have not killed any one, not in a while. ¨

¨ Sure. Then you wouldn´t possibly know who murdered Morgan Smith, the girl whose body you so benevolently put in my van? ¨ Kilroy said, tightening his hold on Will´s neck.

“I didn’t murder her.” Will spit out, his convincing tone almost made himself believe that he had no hand in the murder of Morgan Smith.

“Then what are you doing prowling at a time like this and why did you attack me?” Samuel questioned, loosening his hold just a little bit on Will’s neck.

“I could ask the same you know.” Will raised his eyebrow. “Anyways, I was just curious about the case, since clearly it was the work of a vampire, a newborn possibly. But clearly you don’t look like one.” he continued.

“Well, I am a detective, sure Dr. Parkinson must have told you. Even though this is not much of a medical mystery, but the murderer is still loose.” Sam explained to Will.

“I would like to help you, if you want that is.”, William knew that if he had any luck getting over his guilt, this was the opportunity. Hopefully this Sam guy won’t be too much of an ass and accept his offer.

Sam nodded, “Hmm, okay. Just remember, when it comes to taking credit, Kilroy was here, before.”

William had inkling that this was his catch-phrase, owing to his name sake Captain Kilroy.

William and Samuel walked into the night, unaware of the green eyes that were on them, measuring each of their steps. Candace was glad she had found him so soon, nothing better than a slay to get him on the streets, he might have caught her, but thank God for stopping Will in time.

Maybe she should zing up this reunion with yet another murder. Also what was he doing befriending other vampires. Since when he made friends? He was probably using him for something, poor guy.

Maybe he could be useful for her, plotting her revenge, Candace followed them in apprehension.

“So why did you run away when you saw Morgan’s body?” Sam asked suppressing his curiosity.

William tried to think of an excuse, and then finally decided to take the high road.

“She reminded me of someone, so I was naturally freaked out.”

“Oh, okay. Anyways, we start with finding out other potential murderers. So you have to meet me here at 10.00 from now on. Always watch out for fellow bloodsuckers.”

Will was not so sure about this now. He would have to stay out in the night. What if he got dark circles? That would be still not a big deal, but bats and dogs liked to lurk in the dark. A shudder passed through Will, but he decided to man up.

“Sure.” He affirmed, his tone valiant.

They walked along, searching for other creatures of the night, when the culprit was right behind them, watching their moves, hearing their words.

As the sun rose, Will’s spirit rose with it. He was much more positive abut his decision to help Sam. They departed for the time with an agreement to meet again.
