❝ REST EASY. ❞CHAPTER SEVEN.
When Chayse finally made her way back to the desolate Tennessee field, she didn't allow anyone to ask any questions or give her any orders. She had just gone through something worse than a rollercoaster (she hated most rollercoasters), and was too tired to process anything at the moment.
Even Coran had agreed with the teenager, making the princess step down when she kept asking the new Yellow Paladin questions. It was almost one in the morning, and it was time that the five get some much, much needed sleep.
He told them to rest easy, and they trudged off to bed in their rundown minivan. They would not sleep in the home of aliens they had just met.
Chayse didn't sleep well. Usually she'd blame it on the fact that Miles' long ass legs were kicking her throughout the night, or the fact that Lia snored even louder than her father. But that night it was something completely different.
Her dream was... odd, to say the least.
She was there, standing on a cliff with tears in her eyes. Chayse recognized the armor she wore. Its color matched the Lion she had rode, and it was the same armor she had seen in that photo, worn by her predecessor.
Chayse had never had a dream this detailed. Her hair was much shorter than she had ever had it, and the fiery remains of a town below her seemed clear as day. She thought she was alone.
Then there was a hand on her shoulder. She turned around startled, to see Lia looking at her sadly. Lia's lips moved, but no sound was produced. Chayse could hear nothing in thus dream. Not Lia, and not the frantic birds flying pass.
Lia wore the same armor as Chayse, but she couldn't make out the color.
As tears fell down their faces, their three other friends surrounded them with the same sadness. Finn, Rowan, and Miles engulfed the two, the beat up armor the five wore conforming to their arms.
Why could Chayse not see any colors except her own yellow hue?
Her question could not be answered as she bolted awake, a solid fist rapping at the tinted window of the car. "Good morning! Time to begin Chayse's training!"
The mentioned blinked rapidly, scowling when Lia snorted at her wild appearance. "Sleep well?"
"Do I ever?"
"Uh," Miles raised an eyebrow, "yeah. Your arms always flail around like your swimming in a pool of Hershey's chocolate or some shit."
"Look who's talking, Daddy Long Legs."
"Did you just call me Daddy?"
"Fuck you, let me out of this tin can!" Chayse pushed Miles out of the car, Coran watching the exchange in confusion. Outside the sun was just rising, a refreshing breeze blowing through as mockingbirds chirped to their young.
"Jeez, I need to brush my teeth," Finn huffed, smelling their breath with a scrunched nose. Rowan quickly agreed, and with no hesitation the five began pulling out brushes for both hair and teeth, along with an assortment of other products Coran couldn't recognize.
"What's that?" He asked, pointing to the green packaging held in Rowan's hand.
"Toofplate," Rowan answered as he continued scrubbing her teeth.
"Toofplate?"
"Toofplate!"
"Toofplate."
Rowan sighed, before nodding. He could call it that all he wanted, it didn't affect him in any way.
After they were all ready, 'toofplate' spit out onto the side of the dirt road, Coran led them inside with proud steps. Allura was waiting inside, changed into a formal dress rather than the armor suit she had been wearing the night before. Her hair was also down, its length even combating that of Chayse's.
She seemed to be much calmer, her features softer and more friendly.
"Good morning! Slept well, I hope?" Allura greeted.
"Hm. She seems different," Lia noted.
"Really?" Finn played along, side eyeing the Altean Princess in an observant manner. "I didn't notice."
"Very funny," Allura rolled her eyes, before looking down to the white floor. "Forgive me for last night. I hope you all understand why I acted... a bit hateful towards you."
"Yeah, we get it," Rowan nodded.
"Chayse!" Allura called. Her grin twitched, her immense melancholy shining through for a fleeting moment. It disappeared quickly, remembering that all eyes were on her. "As a Paladin of Voltron, we must get you in fighting shape as soon as possible!"
"Uh, because of that war, right?" Chayse chuckled nervously, and Allura confirmed with no hesitation. "The thing is, I absolutely hate exercise so I hope—"
"Don't worry, you'll come to love it," Coran assured with a twirl of his mustache.
No one was safe from the sheer volume of the Yellow Paladin's groans.
