"This is really bad!" Aubrey threw a rock onto the dirt path. Aubrey just got sent out of the house into the woods. The oak trees were plentiful in red and gold apples. The fresh smell of apple blossoms filled the air and Aubrey's frustration calmed down little by little. Aubrey stood up and put her fist into her palm. "Okay, make the best of it and I'll just ask Tabitha for..."
Aubrey's orderly expression melted away and turned into worry.
"Tabitha?" Aubrey shivered. She hadn't realized that Tabitha wasn't there with her. "Tabitha?" She tried again. She suddenly longed for the assuring warmth around her that she never really thought she would ever be grateful for. She curled back into a ball and wept.
Finders, keepers! The words ringed in her mind. You idiot. You're just a waste of space.
Aubrey slowly uncurled from her ball and got back up, the wind ruffling her amber hair. "I can do without her. Right?"
