Chapter Nine

My pager goes off, and I quickly wake up. The on call room is too dark, so I'm practically searching for my pager blindly.
"Turn it off!" An intern shouts from the top bunk.
"I'm trying to." I find it and shut it off.. I see the small the screen. Fuck. I quickly rush out grabbing my coat as I leave the room.
I run my way down to the E.R but it's empty. What the fuck? I'm pretty sure I read all hands on deck.
"Why was I paged?" I ask the nurse that is behind the desk.
"Those are for you." she points to an arrangement of red and white roses.
"Who sent the page?" I ask annoyed. Flowers are not en emergency.
"I believe it was doctor Evans." she smiles and leaves to attend a patient. I see a small white card on the top of the roses, and I take it.
'Harper, please answer my calls. I'll send you flowers everyday until you call me back."
This is the last thing I needed. I look at the roses, and I find it so hard to throw them away. A patient walks by, and I get an idea. I pick up the arrangement, and head to the fourth floor. Someone up there can really use them.

Laritza and I pull up on the driveway, and we both sit in the car for a couple more minutes. We had a big dinner, and we just can't move. She turns to look at me, and smiles.
"Thank you for dinner sis."
"You're welcome."
"Do you think he knows we're sisters?" she questions
"I don't think so. I'm pretty sure he thinks we're just friends." I say, but I wonder how he didn't find out that she's my sister when he looked up my info.
"Are you going to talk him?" She says as we begin to get out of the car.
"I don't think so."
"What's this?" she asks picking up a yellow envelope. "To Ava" Laritza quickly looks at me. Fear radiating off of her.
"Get inside now!" I shout. I push the door open, and slam it behind us.
This can not be happening right now. I begin to pace around the living room. It's been over five years since all that happened. And he chooses now to come back into my life.
"Harper, we need to call dad." Laritza cries.
"We can't. He'll freak out, and that's the last thing we want." I panic.
"Do I open it?" she asks as she gets the envelope off the coffee table. I nod at her, and she quickly begins to open it. My heart begins to beat faster, it's almost as if I had him in front of me. Laritza takes out some papers, followed by some pictures.
"You thought you were safe, you thought I wouldn't find you. I'm close by, watch out." she reads.
"He know's where we live! We need to leave now!" I panic.
She shows me the pictures and they're the ones from the gala. I take them from her hands, and take a closer look at them. These weren't taken by a pap. These were taken from a phone. My blood goes cold. No. It can't be. Has he known where I've been these past years?
Questions rush through my mind, but right now what I need to focus on is getting a new house. If he knows where I live, it's only a matter time before he shows up, and tries to get me back for what I did to him. I head towards my study, and quickly start up my laptop.
I see Laritza come inside, but I'm on the phone with an agent. She takes a seat, and I turn my laptop over so she can see the house I found for us. Her eyes widen, and a smile creeps up on her face. She looks over the pictures, and her smile only gets bigger.
"What happened?" she questions.
"They're coming tomorrow to get pictures of this house, and we'll go see the new house tomorrow. I'm pretty sure we'll be out of this place by next week. But until then, we need to go to the condo." I open the drawer to my right, and get the keys of the condo.
"What if we're being followed?"
"I don't think so, but we'll be careful. I also have to send an email, to let the board know I'll be taking a couple days off." I turn the laptop back in my direction and open my email.
"Harper, I'm scared." Laritza's voice is barely above a whisper.
"I am too. But if we got away from him once, we can do it again." I say trying to be positive but I know better.
"How is he not dead?"
"I don't know." I murmur.
"I'm going to pack." she gets up and heads out, leaving me alone.
My mind goes back to that night. If I had just left peacefully. This wouldn't be happening. But I had to have the last laugh. Which in reality, wasn't a laugh. He lived. He's out here, breathing, and I'm terrified of what he can do. If I had just finished the job, if I had just killed him for what he did to me. I wouldn't be in this position. My phone buzzes and quickly pick it up
'Please talk to me.'
'Tom, we talked about it.' I press send and get up to go to my room.
'No we didn't. You told me to fuck off, and punched me.' for some reason I laugh. I press the call button by his name, and hope he isn't mad.
"Harper?" his voice is full of surprise.
"That's my name don't wear it out." I laugh.
"I'm sorry."
"I know you are." I pause. "I need to ask for a favor."
"Anything you want consider it done." he answers quickly.
"I need to borrow a car."
"Ok. Harrison and I will drop it off in like twenty minutes if that's ok?" We say our goodbyes and hang up.
Laritza and I wait outside for them to arrive. The plan is that we drive off in his car, and he takes my car back to his place. That way if Alexander is following me, he follows the wrong car.
"So we're taking your car?" Tom asks as I finish explaining the plan.
"Yes."
"Why?" Harrison speaks.
"I'll explain when we get the new house." I say frustrated.
"New house? You're moving?" He says surprised.
"Look Tom, can I please get your help without you bombarding me with questions?" I huff. Right now is not the time to be asking questions. Right now I need to leave this house.
"I'm sorry. But all this is kind of sudden." He says worried.
"I know. I promise I will tell you why we're doing this when I can. Ok?" I reach for his hand.
"Ok." He nods, and hands me the keys to his car.
"Laritza you're driving. I'm going to lay down in the back seat. Tom you take my car, Harrison you take Laritza's car." I say as I hand each of them the respective keys to each car. "Once you two exit the driveway Tom you turn right." I point in the direction he's turning. "And Harrison you turn left." I add.
They all nod their heads, we all get in the cars. Laritza turns on Tom's car and follows behind Tom as he exits. We turn left, and Harrison follows after us.

"This place will always make me feel so small." Laritza says as we carry our bags upstairs.
"I know." I say as I look around.
My father gifted me the condo when I graduated Med school. But I only lived here for a couple of weeks then I got married and never came back until now. The good thing about this place, is that only my immediate family know where it's located. Alexander doesn't know about this little gem.
"I still can't believe dad bought this for you, and I only got a car when I graduated." She laughs.
"Hey he gave all of us a choice. You wanted a car. James wanted money, and well I wanted a place to call my own." I smile at her.
"Then he got you a hospital."
"And he got you, you're own business." I remark.
"Dad has done a lot for us. Hasn't he?" she smiles.
Our father has been the best. I wouldn't change him for the world. Everything we have asked for he has gotten it for us. There isn't a time where he has said no to us. Well there has. That was when I told him I was getting married. He didn't agree with my decision so we grew apart. After Laritza told him how my marriage was going he immediately got in contact with me. He offered to take care of my situation, but I declined. I wanted to do it on my own. I now regret that I didn't take my dad up on that deal. If he would've done it, I'm sure I wouldn't be in this place right now.
My phone begins to ring, and I quickly answer it without seeing who it is.
"Harper?" Doctor Evans voice booms through my phone.
"Oh hey. What's up Doctor Evans." I shyly say.
"I told you, you can call me Chris." he pauses. "I was just calling cause I saw that you're taking time off?"
"Uh yeah. I'm currently going through some tough times. I need to go away for a bit, but I'll be back soon." For some reason I feel like I should tell him more, but I know the less I tell him the better it is for him.
"Ok. Let me know if you need anything Harper." his voice is smooth, comforting even. We say our goodbyes, and hang up.
I rest my head on my window, and look out into the city. The city, that he's in now. It's only a matter of time before he finds me. And I know it's not going to end good. Either he dies, or I die. There is no other option.
Unless I run again.
