CHAPTER TWO
DEFENDED BY A BROTHER?
We were hosting a party for fathers business. It was the first time in a long time he had bought me clothes. I had to go around with a tray giving food or taking trash. I did my best to smile and make father's party a success.
Lenin had brought a couple of his friends and kept calling to me, but whenever I came over they just said Nevermind. Tommy refused to come out of his room because he was playing with his new video game. Hearn is sitting in a corner watching me. Why is there always someone watching me?
I was now terrified of Lenin after the shower incident. I was never in so much pain in my life, a month had passed and I'm glad he didn't do it again.
"Lenin!" A tall man beside me called. Lenin flinched and got up. "Let's talk, outside."
Once lenin left I was called over by his friends. They were grinning and elbowing each other. I quickly re stock my tray and walk over. They continued to giggle at me.
"You're the servent, right? The one we made chew up a used condom?" I only nod.
"I heard you don't speak."
I nod again.
"Why."
My mouth ached to say something but I couldn't, I didn't have to speak anymore, I didn't do anything but clean and cry. Sometimes I don't even cry anymore.
"How old are you?" They pressed on with the questions. This one I could answer. I placed the tray on the table and held out both my hands to show I was ten.
"You didn't even hit puberty yet!" They laughed. "I bet he's got the smallest-"
"We need some drinks over here!" I hear my Father snap in my direction. I clumsily pick up the tray and walk toward him and held out the tray to everyone around them letting them have a choice of what to drink.
"You hired such a young boy to serve at your party?"
"He is for sale." Father says taking a drink from my tray and waving me to go away. I make another round then up back into the kitchen to get a tray of snacks.
As I was walking around i noticed lenin and his friends werent at their usual spot. I tried not to worry about it.
"Give me one." Hearn says just when I'm about to pass him. He turned 12 not too long ago and gave me a slice of cake without me knowing. When I went down stairs there was cake there settling on the ground beside my blanket. Boy did I savor that cake.
I held out the tray to him and he took one. "You don't talk at all." He says. "I've forgotten what you sound like."
I stand there shifting from one leg to the other. He holds out a strawberry. I dont take it.
"I'll start feeding you more." He muttered. "Not because I care, but if it helps you gain weight, you'll get sold soon." He glanced around. "Now eat this and go away."
I let his put the strawberry in my mouth. I eat it and look at Hearn for a bit longer. We looked very different. They all three look exactly like my dad. Black hair and big green eyes. My eyes drop to my nice new shoes.
Lenin was with his friends again and they paid no attention to me. father was talking to his group of employees. I walk around more to see if people wanted anything.
A big rough hand grabbed one of my shoulders. Too scared to see who it was, I stop moving and wait for the person to talk. "Hello sweet heart." A southern accent, "you don't mind bring some cake over here now do you?"
