Chapter 7
2 Beds too Short
Lenin is taking me shopping for the school supplies I need. He was in charge of the list since I myself didn’t know how to read. Lenin had a side to him I’m very happy to see. He was still scary sometimes, but I didn’t react like before.
I am starting middle school since I’m 13. The school is connected to the high school which is supposed to make life easier for the students. I looked down at the basket which had what I needed. This was pretty exciting. I’ll get to learn and be just as smart as Lenin! I’ll be able to tell him what I want for dinner, I love when he makes beef with bell peppers, because it’s kind of sweet.
“Alright we got everything you need… do you want anything else?” He asked me putting a pencil case into the basket I was holding. The store is filled with things I thought I wanted. Televisions that were 3x bigger than ours. Toys down every isle. Food had a huge section of its own! Even though I would really like to run around telling him I want this and that, I know what money is and I know I should be asking for anything.
I shake my head.
“Are you sure?” He asked as we walk towards the cashier.
I nod.
At home I snuggled beside Lenin as he watched a movie he had rented. I wasn’t very interested in it because I was too busy concentrating on the way Lenin’s chest rose and fell. It was so calming. The sound of the tv and the sound of Lenin’s soft breathing made me sleepy.
My eyes snap open when the door made a loud bang. Lenin made a low growl and gently moved me to the side so he could answer the door. I leaned over the couch to see who it is.
Lenin opened the door and I could hear him groan. “What are you two doing here?” I could see Tommy standing there, behind him was Hearn. I smile, which didn’t last very long.
Tommy shoved Lenin hard shouting, “You FUCK! You got dad arrested!” Hearn followed in pulling at Tommy.
“It’s not his fault! Dad got himself arrested!” Hearn tugged on Tommy who was just about to put his fist on Lenin’s face. I didn’t want that to happen so I hop over the couch and tackle Tommy.
My mistake.
Tommy grabbed my shoulders and shoved me against the counter. “NO! It’s YOUR fault!” He snapped punching me right in the nose.
HOLY GOD.
I was in pain and shock I didn’t even notice how Tommy ended up on the floor not moving.
What was going on?
Lenin snapped me out of my daze and I realized he hit Tommy on the head. “Are you okay?” he touched my cheek, patting my nose with a tissue. Was I okay? I don’t know... my nose hurts really badly.
“Hey, hey don’t cry you’ll be okay.” Lenin cooed making me realize how uneasy my breathing was and how watery my eyes had gotten. I of course seeking for his protection and warmth, cling to him. I had become so dependent on Lenin.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turn my throbbing face to look at Hearn. I couldn’t read the expression on his face. He just stared at me, his stare made me want to hide my face.
“You haven’t done anything to him did you?” Hearn turned his attention to Lenin the tone of his voice hard at accusing. Lenin didn’t reply. “Lenin!” he snapped.
“I haven’t done anything!” He shouted back rubbing the back of his neck. ‘I can’t… I mean, as much as I want to... I can’t.”
What are they talking about?
Hearn continued to stare at Lenin and Lenin continued to stare at Hearn. It lasted a long time. Well, it felt like a long time. After the never ending glare battle I push my way in between them and give Hearn a hug. I was so used to giving hugs I didn’t even think twice about it. The body I was hugging didn’t hug me back though.
Hearn is still very special to me. There was no way to express how I felt.
Wait a minute.
I could use the same method I’ve been using with Lenin whenever I felt really happy or when I want to say thank you. My very own sweet treat to give, just thinking about it got me excited. And giving the treat to Hearn made it even more exciting. To my disappointment he pulled away and pat my head.
“Ugh..” I jumped as Tommy slowly sat up. Hearn helped him.
“Are you alright Tommy?” Hearn asked holding his head and looking for any sign of blood.
“Hearn. Stop.” He pushed at Hearn and struggled to keep balance as he stands up. He stumbled toward Lenin and leaned on him. Lenin grabbed tommy and held him back at a distance. “Lenin-.” He started.
“Don’t.”“Just let me-.”
“I said DON’T.” Lenin snapped shoving Tommy into Hearn. “You two need to leave, NOW.”
Hearn set Tommy down gently walked out the door and came back in with a bunch of bags. “We can’t. We are moving in with you.” He says, “Dad isn’t here to watch us and Tommy is 17, we can easily be kicked out of the house and be forced to live in the streets. Tommy’s part time job isn’t going to keep us going.” He dropped the bags. “Take responsibility for your younger brothers.”
Lenin looked at me. I don’t understand what’s going on. Tommy and Hearn are going to be living with us?
