Evelyn barely slept last night. How could she have? She tried to save someone, but ended up being the one to make them run away and get killed! It was her fault! Evelyn started crying again as she continued packing her belongings into her trunk. Queenie saw this and put a hand on her friends shoulder.
"It wasn't your fault." Queenie said.
Evelyn meekly smiled, then returned to a frown. Queenie doesn't really understand. She doesn't know that Evelyn is from the future, a Hufflepuff, muggleborn, and sent here to prevent Tom Riddle from becoming Voldemort. Evelyn would sound like a crazy but job, and get carted off to St. Mungo's if she told anyone that. Or be killed if they believed her. It was best to never tell anyone. She put the last item into her trunk and shut it with a click.
"Well, we'll be back here in September." Queenie said, finished packing also. Evelyn nodded and wiped her sleeve against her face. She rolled her trunk out of her dorm and saw Tom leaning against the wall, a very angry look on his face.
"What's wrong?" Evelyn asked. Tom glanced at her before looking at the fire.
"Since Dippet doesn't know who killed the girl, he might be forced to close the school. Even Dumbledore thinks so." Tom said.
It was then Evelyn thought that maybe Tom didn't want the school to close. Evelyn knew he killed Myrtle. But she couldn't tell anyone. Maybe Tom didn't think the school was going to close because he did.
"They can't close Hogwarts! I don't want to go to stupid Beauxbatons!" Queenie said angrily.
"I'll make sure it doesnt close." Tom said. I set my trunk down.
"What?" I asked.
"I talked with Dumbledore after they took that girl away. I asked that if I found the culprit, Hogwarts would stay open. He said yes. And I know who it is." Tom said. Tom hastily walked towards the entrance of the common room and Evelyn quickly followed.
"Why are you coming?" Tom briskly asked once he was out of the dungeons. Evelyn bit her lip,
"I want to see the person who killed Myrtle Warren caught." She lied. But she was getting good at it. Tom's face was unreadable but he nodded.
"Yes. You seemed quite upset that she was killed."
"I was trying to befriend her, and she got angry at me and ran. It's my fault she was even in the bathroom." That wasn't a lie. Tom stopped running and looked at me. He did something I didn't expect. He cupped his hand gently on my cheek and said,
"It wasn't your fault Evelyn."
In that moment I believed him. He let go and continued running. Evelyn's cheeks flushed in, she didn't know what. Tom stopped in a deserted hallway, and Evelyn was so focused on what had happens that she ran right into him.
"Oof! Sorry!" She exclaimed. Tom didn't acknowledge her. He started at a door and whipped his wand out.
"Bombarda!" He yelled. The door opened and slammed into the wall with a bang, splinters falling.
"Evening Hagrid." Evelyn froze. Hagrid?? Her mouth suddenly felt very dry. How could she have forgotten Tom frames Hagrid!!
"I'm going to have to turn you in, Hagrid. I don't think you meant to kill anyone, but--" A young Hagrid stood up.
"You can't! You don't understand!" He tried to explain that his spider wasn't the killer. Evelyn knew that, but made no move.
"The least Hogwarts can do is make sure that the thing that killed the girl is slaughtered." Tom said raising his wand.
"It wasn't him! Aragog never killed no one! Never!" Hagrid exclaimed. Evelyn bit her lip. Poor Hagrid! He was always there to comfort her when she felt too lonely.
"Monsters don't make good pets, Hagrid. Now stand aside." Tom said. Hagrid yelled a strangled,
"No!"
"Stand aside Hagrid!" Tom said angrily.
"No!"
Evelyn watched with fear at was going to happen. She hoped no one was going to get hurt. Tom turned and started firing spells at the 'small' spider.
"Cistem aperio! Arania Exumai!" Tom shouted. The spider scuttled quickly and Evelyn shrieked when it passed her. Tom cursed and put away his wand.
"I can't let you go. They'll have your wand for this Hagrid." Evelyn out a hand to her mouth.
"You'll be expelled." Tom said. Hagrid shook his head in disbelief.
"Aragog. Aragog." He cried for his friend. Evelyn felt truly sorry for him.
"Evelyn, run and get Headmaster Dippet." Tom said. Evelyn looked to Hagrid, then back to Tom. She reluctantly nodded and silently ran.
She reached the Headmasters office and paused to catch her breath. Should she do this? Dumbledore said to stay with Tom. He said to make him trust her. So Evelyn knocked. The door swung open and she walked in."Ah Miss Montmorency. How may I help you?" Dippet asked. Evelyn took a deep breath.
"Tom Riddle caught who killed Myrtle Warren." She said. All the tension in the room increased and Dippet stood up.
"Lead the way." He said.
We reached Tom and Hagrid, and Dippet gasped."Rubeus Hagrid?" He asked turning to Tom.
"It's true sir. Evelyn and I saw his monster." Tom said. Dippet looked to Evelyn for confirmation. Evelyn bit her lip again, but nodded nonetheless. Evelyn felt horrible. She felt like she was betraying a friend! He was her friend! Well, was. Dippet sighed and looked at Hagrid.
"I'm sorry. There are witnesses. And that box as evidence. I'm so sorry Hagrid. But you will be expelled." Headmaster Dippet said. Hagrid lowered his head in shame. Evelyn felt a pang of guilt. Dippet then turned to the two of us.
"Tom, for catching the culprit, you will receive an award for your service to the school." Dippet said. Tom's face showed pride as he smirked. When he excused us Tom mouthed a Thank you too me. Evelyn knew that she shouldn't fall for him. But her heart is starting to tell her otherwise.
The train ride was quiet, but Evelyn didn't mind. She glanced at Tom a few times before he caught her gaze and smiled. Evelyn blushed madly but smiled back. When Evelyn got off the train, Avery and Lestrange said their goodbyes and left. Tom brought her into a gentle hug and mumbled a goodbye. He let go and walked away. "Good bye." She whispered.
Evelyn stood on Platform 9 3/4 waiting for the Montmorency's to arrive. Dumbledore had contacted them and told them my situation. Evelyn wasn't panicking because Dumbldore said he trusts the couple with his life. He said they were great students and would accept her like their real daughter. They don't have any kids.
"Excuse me, are you Evelyn?" A woman's voice asked. Evelyn turned around and saw a couple with very nice clothing on.
"Yes, are you the Montmorency's?" Evelyn asked.
"Yes dear. We are so excited to meet you." Mrs. Montmorency said. She brought Evelyn into a tight hug then released.
"This is my husband Liam, and I'm Amelia. Shall we apparated?" She asked. Evelyn smiled and nodded. We held onto each other, Liam holding my trunk, and disapparated.
When we stopped moving Evelyn opened her eyes and gasped. She was standing in the front room of the most elegant house she had ever seen! She turned to her new guardians and smiled. Amelia held her husband's arm smiling.
"Welcome home."
Evelyn knew she was going to have a great summer.
