Chapter 1 - Dance

CALLUM MCCOY

"Oh just dress up already." Cal heard his boss yell.

He sighed and ran his hand down the navy blue suit that Tessa Cole had brought for him.

Tessa Cole-Miles was a famous and the most sought after lawyer in Manhattan after she won a case that was deemed to fail. That and the case of her own husband.

Back then when she was single, David Miles was accused of organ trafficking and she had saved him. They'd lived happily ever after.

It was kind of a fairytale that Cal knew would never happen to him.

"Caaaaaalviiiin." She yelled in a sing song voice.

"Hold your horses, woman."

He had been her assisstant for two years now and since Dave, her husband had flown back to Australia for some business, Tess decided that she could take Calvin to one of her sister's parties.

Her sister, Alexis Beckett, now Alexis Hunt, was a famous fashion designer and the owner of a fashion house, Mirage.

A moment later his door flew open and a loud hmmm resounded

"What?"

"You look handsome Mr. Henning ."

"Yeah. I don't feel good in this."he said as he smoothed his palms down his jacket and then fidgeted with his tie

Calvin had spent his whole life in tattered clothes. Later, he'd joined the Navy and he felt comfortable in his uniform. It was the first time he was wearing a tux. Even at work he wore a simple shirt and trousers.

"C'mon. I don't wanna be late."

"We're already late." He deadpanned and loosened the tie.

Tess swatted his hand away and tightened it.

"We're fashionably late. Everybody does that. If we don't leave now, then we're way beyond late and Lexi will kill me."

Cal shook his head, "I don't understand all your tricks. What the fuck does fashionably late even mean? You're either late or you're not." That's what he was taught in the army.

Tessa shook her head and smiled. She looked at him from the tip of his hair to the tip of his shoes.

"You know, you might even get laid, tonight."

Calvin didn't say anything. His love life was next to nothing. He was damaged goods and the uppity snobs just weren't for him.

He was single and he hoped it stayed that way. He was good looking enough to score a one night stand in a bar. That's all he was looking for anyway.

He walked out without any comment.

*********

Calvin looked around and looked at the security that Logan and Lexi had arranged for the party. He hated it that despite the fact that it had been over five years since he left the army, his first instinct every time he went somewhere was to look for the entry-exit points, look for the guards, assess what could be the threat and always always keep an escape route prepared in case of emergencies.

With so many rich and famous attending this party, it was no wonder, that they would have hired the most sought after security firm. Eyeing the guards and the way they coordinated, his eyes met one of the guys who gave him a slight nod and went back to assessing the room. He knew the guy probably sensed that he was one of them.
