Chapter 4 - Cuddles

MONISHA SINGH

The ride back to Cal's place wasn't awkward as most silent situations did but it was just pure silent. So silent that Mon wished even a white noise in the background could soothe her.

She flipped on the radio and leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes when she heard a voice from beside her.

Her eyes opened to see Calvin bob his head to the beat, singing the song, albeit the wrong lyrics but damn did the guy had an amazing voice.

When the last notes of the song were being strummed on what she guessed was a guitar she cocked her head to the side as she regarded him.

"Where did you learn to sing like that?"

"I didn't. Mom used to sing to me. When I was a kid she used to sing or hum 24/7. Guess I kind of picked up on that."

"Well now you know you have a backup career, if oly there was someplace that could teach you the right lyrics."

Cal laughed at that. "For a quiet chick you are full of sarcasm."

"Yeah. What I lacked in physical strength, I made up for it verbally. This mouth got me into a lot of problems."

Cal's smile slipped off his face and Mon sighed. "You don't have to keep giving me sad faces. Look, it's nothing new to me. This is my family. And they've tried to kill me. They had stopped until almost two years ago when my grandmother died. After that they usually broke into my house. Took some things. Nothing that I couldn't replace. Today they crossed a line, you know. And if they can want me dead, I can want the same too "

"I sense a lot of hatred."

"It's not exactly hatred. I've had enough of them. I don't have monsters in my closet because the monsters are right outside. I can't sleep without the locking the door because I feel like someone's gonna..." She trailed off.

She picked her tote bag from the back seat and fished out the pack of cigarettes and a lighter.

"Light one for me too, will ya?"

She did and handed one to him while she smoked the other one.

"I just want a life Cal. Sean gave me a life but they keep ruining it. I want to live. And it's wrong of me to want them dead but I can't go to the cops."

"It's cool, sweets. I just need to break into my armory, choose the perfect thing and then we are off to killing"

Monisha smiled. "You make it seem like we are going hunting."

"Aren't we on a man hunt?" He said with the cigarette between his lips.

Mon just offered a smile. It was weird that she felt safe with him. Though there shouldn't be any doubts. He had done this a whole lot of time though she wasn't sure he had killed anybody before. But then, he did say he was an assassin. And what assassin didn't kill people.

It was true when she'd said she couldn't sleep without locking the doors but here in the car with Cal beside her, it was easy for her to just close her eyes and doze off because she knew that he wouldn't let anything happen to her.

Monisha woke up to an unfamiliar room. She couldn't much make out as to where she was as it was dark outside.

Shit. Had they caught her? Where was Cal? Had they killed him? She shouldn't have involved him at all. She felt the guilt clawing at her chest until she felt something holding her down by the waist.

As the panic rose, she wiggled and twisted trying to lose whatever it was that was holding her down.

"Go to sleep Mon."

"Cal" she whispered.

Cal just hummed and pulled her closer. Guess it was just his arm around her waist. "You're warm." He murmured and nuzzled her neck.

She felt her lips pull in a small smile.

Her muscles relaxed and she turned in his hold, facing him.

"Where are we?"

"My place." He murmured.

"How did I get here?"

Cal just hummed and a soft snore escaped his lips.

She giggled. That was so cute. He must've been tired what with getting less sleep the night before and trying to save her.

She pressed a kiss to his forehead and he sighed. Who knew the big bad assassin loved cuddling.

As suffocating as it made her feel before, with Cal here she felt different.

She felt that she belonged there which was weird considering they hadn't much talked before.

She tried to go back to sleep but she couldn't. And there was no way she'd be able to get out from under his arm.

So she laid there and thought back to the moment she had sat there in the library staring at the threat.

Why now? What did they want now? Sure they'd always wanted to kill her but even after her grammy died they hadn't hurt her. This threat, she knew this wasn't the work of her father. As much as she hated the man, she couldn't deny that he was a bit sophisticated in his killings.

There were no warnings. Second chances were given very rarely. You cross paths with him, he'll kill you. He never much used threats. Neither did he ever swore. Plus he didn't understand English.

The only people that she could think of were her brothers. But why now? Why not before? And again she had nothing to do with them so why were they after her to begin with?

"Your thoughts are so loud that they're waking me up."

"You could've dumped me on the couch. My thoughts wouldn't have been this loud then."

"But you're a nice warm teddy bear. I like a nice warm teddy bear."

With a shake of her head Mon erased her thoughts. There was always tomorrow for all the whys and what's and how's.

Right now a certain guy was snuggling up with her, and even though sleep didn't come to her, she just lied there enjoying the feeling of being safe in his nice, warm cuddle
