Now, as a ranter, I might come off as thinking I'm superior because I criticize things. It can be that way for a lot of people who rant. But ranting is just a way of venting. We don't mean to come off as high and mighty; we're just angry. My point is, no one likes a person who thinks they're better for doing something or not doing something. This is probably why a lot of people hate hipsters. They think they're better for not being "mainstream" or at least some of them are. You know what else? The same thing applies to authors.
I swear to God, there's alway that one author, that one. "These teenagers always make these mistakes because they're following a trend. These teenagers don't take writing seriously. These kids are too focused on this, this, and this to care about anything". This pisses me off to no end. What has this come to? Being a teenager = terrible author? It's no better than those stupid ass high school movies. Being a teenager = drug/alcohol addict, horny, partying all the time, obsessing over boys/girls, and hating their parents? I'll admit it. Even as a teenager, I don't like teenagers. But that doesn't mean all of them suck and that certainly doesn't mean all of our books suck.
Yeah, there's some shitty books by teenagers on here. "OMG I got kidnapped and raped by 1D!" "The alpha, vampire, rich hot boy whose also in a gang is now my mate!" Even so, it isn't fair to lump all teenagers on this website into those categories. Obviously these people just want to write out their fantasies. But get this, did you know that there are teens who actualy....wait for it...care? We put every ounce of our being into our stories. We sit late at night editing, thinking about our characters, taking every piece of criticism to heart, and making our story the best we can make it. We ask for advice and feedback. Some of us really do love writing stories, I promise. Also, how do they expect us to get better if they just sit around bitching about how sucky our books are? If we care, we strive to improve. They do realize books still need to be written right? If they wave us off because we're teenagers, that doesn't do anyone any good.
And you know what else? Appreciate the fact that we even consider writing. Even if the stories we post might be a steaming pile of monkey shit, at least we're not out doing drugs/ alchohol or getting arrested (although people who write those really disturbing 1D fanfictions make me question my sanity). There's no need to wear a douche hat every time a teenager posts a story. No one's automatically the Holy Uber-Emperor God of all things Literature because they're not teenagers.
Sadly it's not just a few adults that do this. Teenagers do this as well, which is why I don't like us either. They think their stories are better than everyone else's just because they have a few more reads. This goes back to my rant about critiques. They don't take criticism well; point out something wrong with their story? You're an insane, jealous, dickhead who just "doesn't get it". The quality of a story can't be judged by popularity. Just look at Twilight; they have to be the worst books ever written, but it became a sensation.
Unless Jesus Christ Himself comes down from Heaven to declare you the Holy Uber-Emperor God of all things Literature, you have no right to believe your story has no flaws. It's good to be proud of your work, but not to a point where you get delusional.
Short, but I just had to get this out.
