I watched Gena until she had stopped writhing around on the floor, her feeble little screams and whimpers fading out into silence. I stood there for a while – just watching her. Watching her as her body went still, ignoring her as she mumbled my name over and over again.
Eventually, I managed to breathe a sigh of relief.
She was dead.
It took a few minutes for me to force myself to move. My eyes were fixated on her, on the large, shimmering pool of blood that surrounded her body. But, just as I managed to tear my eyes away from her, Brian’s voice rang out over the silence.
‘ZACKY!’ He yelled, making me flinch. I took a deep breath, nodding, before quickly making my way from the basement.
The moment I’d left the basement, the door slammed shut behind me, making me jump, and I turned my head to see Brian standing there, his arms folded across his chest and his nostrils flaring. I bit my lip.
‘Care to explain?’ He hissed through his teeth, leaning against the door and glaring at me as I turned to face him fully.
‘Um…’
‘Alright, let me word that differently. What the fuck, Zack!?’ He shouted in my face, causing me to cringe away from him.
‘I’m sorry,’ I mumbled incoherently, saying the only thing that I could force out of my mouth. But this didn’t soften Brian’s infuriated expression at all.
‘No you’re not, go tell that to her.’ He nudged his head towards the door behind him. ‘I’ll say it again, Zack. What. The. Fuck?’
‘Brian…’
‘No, don’t ‘Brian’ me!’ He cried, holding his arms out in exasperation. ‘Do you have any idea how fucking difficult this makes everything, Zack!? Any idea at all?’ I hung my head, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes already.
‘This makes everything a million times more fucking difficult!’ He yelled, and I flinched again. ‘It was hard enough taking you, Zack.’ His voice softened now, his deep brown eyes meeting mine. ‘But we got better, didn’t we?’ I nodded, wiping my right eye with my thumb. ‘And it was even harder to take her but I had to, didn’t I?’ I nodded again, breaking his eyes contact now. I couldn’t look him in the eye, I just couldn’t.
‘We could have managed with her, it wouldn’t have been hard. But no, Zack, you just had to fuck it up!’ He raised his voice, his eyes glinting with anger once again. ‘Why did you do that!? What, in the name of God, possessed you to do THAT!?’ There was a pause, the awkward silence suffocating me. When I didn’t answer, Brian laid his hand on my shoulder, surprisingly gently.
‘Zack.’
‘I did it for us,’ I whispered, looking up and meeting his eyes. ‘I want to be with you, I didn’t want her to get in the way…’ I sniffled, hanging my head again and not wanting to see Brian’s reaction.
‘Zacky…’ I reluctantly looked up to see him shaking his head, looking up at the ceiling. I could tell that I’d gotten to him – because when he spoke, all traces of anger had just disappeared from his voice. ‘Nothing would ever get between us,’ he whispered, snaking his arms around my waist and resting his chin on the top of my head. ‘Nothing, you hear me?’
I nodded, surprised that he’d gone from being so close to killing me, to THIS, in a matter of seconds. We stood there for a while, before Brian pulled away and looked down at me, sighing.
‘I’m not forgiving you for this,’ he said, and I nodded, letting out my own heavy sigh.
‘I know…’
