" i wish we could stay like this." eddie said to richie.
"me too." richie sighed admiring the scene around them. they were laying at the quarry on top the rock structure viewing the stars. the quarry became a night spot for the two when they were without bill and stanley.
it was quiet, the kind of quiet where you could hear nothing and everything at the same time. have you ever felt it? you're so far away from everything and surrounded by nothing but nature. eddie thought it was one of the greatest feelings ever. he felt safer than ever.
"bubs?" richie said to eddie. "i really love you." he whispered.
"i know." eddie replied. "i already know, you tell me all the time." he giggled a bit, "i love you too."
"sometimes i just get, scared you know? i don't want you to forget" eddie shifted closer to richie and rested his head on richie's stomach.
"i won't forget." eddie started. "not even the day i die." richie pulled him closer.
"let's go on a date tomorrow." richie suggested.
"a date? aren't we already on one." richie knew this was true but he wanted to spend as much time as he possibly could with eddie.
"yeah of course, but like i just wanna go on another one. what are you getting tired of me?" the two boys laugh but whenever richie ever asked a question like that deep inside there was a seriousness in his gut.
"never." eds said giving him a quick peck on his cheek.
the next day the two boys were at their own houses getting ready for their date. eddie just wore a short sleeve white button up with a black bow-tie and black slacks being sure the shirt was tucked into the pants held together firmly with a belt. he didn't have any fancy shoes so he wore black converse.
eddie never got to see what richie wore that night.
eddie confidently walked down his stairs ready to walk to his boyf- romantic partner's house. to say he was excited was an understatement. it was his first 'fancy' date with richie. "ooh my eddie looks so cute." eddie's mom gushed at her son who stood on the bottom step.
"gosh mom." he groaned and wanted to run away. "look at the time." he said pointing to the clock. he dashed towards the front door but his mom stopped him once more.
"you haven't even told me who your date is!" she called out.
"don't worry you already know him!" eddie's heart dropped out of his body immediately and the rest of his body went completely numb.
he was so terrified he felt as if his soul had packed its bags and left his body, not wanting to be here for the upcoming scene. eddie's thought's stopped time attempting to collect themselves but they didn't get the chance before he felt a tight grip on his forearm.
eddie was always small, he never regretted it more than at this time.
"did you just say 'him'?" his mother got close to his face. eddie wanted to break down in tears but he couldn't move in any way.
"mo-mom...please..." eddie pleaded not knowing what else to do. he never expected a reaction like this out of his mother.
"i'm not going to let you run around and do sinful things with some boy!" she screamed, a vein prominently stating its position in both her forehead and her neck.
"mama!" eddie yelled not knowing what else to do. he couldn't say it wasn't sinful, he always had that thought in the back of his mind. if he wasn't then he is now fully convinced that it's true.
"i can't make you stop liking him but i can make him stop liking you, go to the phone." eddie was in shock, as he was the past few moments. "let me write this down." she grabbed a shopping list of the fridge and a pen from the counter before scribbling down words.
eddie stood there nervously playing with his fingers. we wanted this all to end. when his mother shoved the paper in his hand eddie lost control. reading the words on the paper "i need to talk to you...i can't come...i don't love you..." right there was when eddie knew he couldn't do this. he needed to come up with and excuse and fast.
his mother's eyes looked through his, wait no, they burned through his. "i don't know his number!" eddie blurted out. he didn't know what else to do.
"that's fine." she said. he was startled at her words. until she followed it with. "he'll call eventually if you don't show up."
"mama please don't make me do this." eddie was finally able to get out a full sentence, "you don't have t-"
"of course i do!" she was fuming, eddie could have sworn there was actually steam coming out of her ears. "i will not have my boy committing such blasphemous crimes under my roof!"
the moment the phone rang eddie wanted to fade out of existence. instead he picked up the phone before his mother did.
his breath hitched in his throat as he spoke the first word, well attempted to. "hi." he croaked.
"eds." richie said sounding concerned.
"hi." he repeated.
"you already said that." richie pointed out.
"i know." his mother urged him to continue with anger all over her face. eddie covered the microphone of the phone, "i can't do this." he whispered.
"i can." she said trying to stand up.
"no!" he stopped her. "nevermind i got it." he took the paper from her hands once again and read it word for word. "r- i need to talk to you." eddie refrained from using his name so his mother couldn't harm him.
"you already are babe..." that only made eddie's heart wrench more. the first and most likely the last time richie would ever call him that.
"i can't come, on the date."
"that's okay." richie said softly sensing eddie was distressed.
"no i-i r-" 16 years of speaking the english language yet eddie couldn't get these words out.
"eddie!" his mom pushed.
"eddie." richie also urged him to continue.
eddie glanced over the words on the paper. "i don't love you, i don't think i ever will. you're a boy and it's wrong. i was just confused. you were just an experiment. we can't be together. now please, don't call me, don't speak to me in school and never ever come to my house. i want nothing to do with you. i cannot feel this way and there's only one way to assure that. goodbye."
"i do-don't love you." eddie sobbed on the word love almost silencing it out of the sentence. "i don't think i e-ever will. y-you're a b-b-boy and it's wrong." his words were almost entirely inaudible. "i was confused, you were an ex-experiment." eddie took a deep breath in trying to collect himself. "we can't be together." he cried quickly wanting to get the phrase out of his mouth. "don't call me, don't speak to me in s-sc-school, and don't come to my house. i want nothing to do with you." eddie couldn't speak anymore so he closed the call. "goodbye." he said loud enough for his mother to hear who currently had a smug look on her face. "i love you." he whispered while his mother wasn't paying attention.
eddie quickly ran up the stairs and locked his door behind him. he thew random clothes into his bag, grabbed his toothbrush out of his bathroom, his wallet from his dresser, and climbed out the window. his bike was in his front lawn so he quickly jumped on it and rode away from his house as quick as he could.
