eddie looked at richie in complete confusion. of course he appreciated the fact that he was actually speaking to him he just didn't understand why.
"what?" was all eddie could get out.
"you love me." richie repeated.
"no i heard that." he confirmed. "how do you kno- did anything i said on the phone mean anything to you?"
"edward kaspbrak, how much of an idiot do you think i am?" eddie felt insulted at this comment.
"i-i." eddie didn't know what to say. "so you didn't believe me?"
"no edward. what would possibly cause you to change the way you feel about me that quick?" he understood where richie was coming from. it was almost impossible to change the way he felt about him that quickly without reason. "i do want to know why you told me all of those things though." richie scooted his desk slightly closer to eddie's so they could talk quieter.
"my mom hates you." eddie mumbled. "or at least the idea of you. she doesn't know it's you." he addressed the situation in whatever way he felt best.
"so why would she make you call me?" eddie sighed in dissapontment.
"i accidentally told her that who i was going out with was a boy." richie still stared at him with confusion in his eyes. "she doesn't know it was you i called."
"eddie, oh my god!" richie burst out into laugher. eddie didn't find anything about this situation funny.
"what?" he asked, annoyance evident in his voice.
"she doesn't know it's me! you don't have to avoud me, we can still hang out as if nothing has changed. your mother loves me!" eddie felt stupid when richie said this.
"what if she finds out?" he asked.
"she won't! i'm like a magician." eddie rolled his eyes at richie but was thankful for the positivity he brought to every conversation.
"thanks rich." he smiled genuinely and felt safe again. now nothing could ruin the moment.
class flew by and the two boys left together. "i forgot to mention..." richie began, "you ended the call by saying you love me."
"richie." eddie called before he was left behind. richie often walked fast. eddie hooked his finger into richie's belt loop -old habits die hard- and followed him through the hall. "richie i want to take you on a date." eddie stated with a questioning tone in his voice.
"was that a question?" richie laughed but realised that eddie was truly trying to be confident. "yes of course you can take me." he smiled and eddie was once again happy. "now where is it you'd be taking me?" richie asked.
"that my dear friend, is a surprise."
after school eddie went home as did richie. richie changed out of his clothes and wore a casual sweater and a pair or khakis. he heard richie's car horn honk outside of his house and ran down the steps.
"i'm going to stay the night at richie's ma." he gave his mother a quick peck but didn't stop him.
when eddie ran out of the house he expected to see the same beige car richie's mother owned but instead his eyes met a red corvete. "richie!" he exclaimed before hoping into the passenger side.
"what is this?" he asked super impressed. "i thought i was taking you on the date!" richie laughed at his excitement then explained.
"my weekend jobs have finally paid off. this is gonna take a while to do so but that's alright. it's kinda janky and used though." richie sighed feeling a bit embarassed.
"oh hush, now drive!" eddie exclaimed as richie put his foot on the gas.
"where are we going anyways?" richie wondered.
"i'll direct you so go steady." richie nodded and continued to drive. "you did tell your mom you'd be at my place for the weekend right rich?"
"of course i did! and you?"
"absolutely." eddie giggled and enjoyed the air hitting his face.
