eddie never felt as reassured as he did when the tall curly headed boy answered the door. "stanley!" he exclaimed pulling him into a hug, almost as if he were trying to hid his tear stained face from his view.

"eddie." stanley pulled them apart and held eddie by his shoulders. "what's wrong?" he led the boy into his house and up the stairs to his room. stanley's room always made eddie feel comfortable. whether it was the solitude of the cleanliness of it, he just felt safe.

eddie sat down on the bed and stan patiently waited for him to speak. he didn't want to rush him. "i accidentally came out to my mom." eddie admitted.

"accidentally?" asked stan.

"when she asked who i was going out with i told her she already knew him." stanley nodded acknowledging the words eddie spoke. "i didn't know she would react the way she did."

"how was that?" stan inquired. eddie laid back on the bed calming himself down.

"terrible." he said. "she made me tell him i didn't love him, it's not true." he said a barely-there tear running down his cheek. "it's not true."

stanley didn't know how to comfort him he had never been in this situation before and while stanley often knew a lot of things-some people even thought he was psychic- this was one of the things where he just didn't know what to do.

"do you want ice cream?" stanley offered. all eddie did was nod. "let's go to the 24 hour shoppe, get you out of the house and your mind off of things. and maybe you should..." stanley looked at the outfit eddie was wearing taking not on how overdressed he was, "...change your clothes." he chuckled.

after eddie got into something more casual the two climbed into the car. stanley wanted to turn on the radio but when he did ever song was ironically a love song so he settled for the silence that filled the vehicle. both of them knew that this would be uncomfortable, eddie and stan were close but stanley had a nearly sadistic sense of humor and always struggled to hold back when a joke was inappropriate.

when they got to the ice cream parlor all the bright lights and pop music felt so unfit. the boys seated themselves at the bar and looked at the menu. although it was an ice cream parlor the place had a few odd items on the menu.

"ooh waffles." stanley said with a smile.

a grin pulled at eddies face when he observed his excitement. "i'm going to get a banana split." eddie stated.

"more split than y-" stanley stopped himself. "yeah i'm getting a waffle." when they were ready the waitress walked to their place on the bar. eddie ordered his food and stanley ordered his. "can i please get a waffle!" he said enthusiastically.

"anything else for you two?" the red headed waitress asked.

"no thanks..." stanley tried to find a name tag, "bev!" he yelled. "you came back?" the woman's face went red.

"st-stanley?" she managed to get out. "and eds?" she obviously didn't expect to see them here, or at least not recognize her.

eddie attempted to zone out not wanting the extra stress on his mind as stanley and beverly talked. he listened in on other people's conversations. "you spilled lipstick in my vale-" one woman began to yell at her daughter.

"what country are lesbians from?" asked someone's little brother. "no." she laughed. "lebanese."

"oh no!" i guy said walking out the door, "i almost dropped my croissant."

another man was sitting on his phone having a heated conversation. "so no head?" he asked before throwing his phone.

"look at all this chicken!" a little girl laughed looking at the menu.

eddie was very interested in all the conversations happening around him. "wow." some guy said sitting next to him.

"what?" eddie asked.

"there sure are a lot of people out this late at night." he said.

"yeah." sighed eddie. "what about you?"

"i'm on a road trip, just wanted some food. and you?" he asked.

"relationships." was all eddie said. the guy nodded, obviously understanding the complications that come with such things.

"i hope it gets better." he said. the man ordered himself a coffee to go and left the shop. eddie returned to beverly and stanley's conversation when he heard his name.

"what about you eds?" she asked him.

"huh?"

"how have you been." stanley did a cutthroat motion with his hand signaling her not to ask the question.

"fine." eddie lied.

"oh." she said softly. "well whatever it is, i hope it gets better." eddie laughed at the identical phrase.

he wish he could say it did.
