I hate hospitals. I hate the white floor, the boring white walls, the bright white lights. I hate the people that work there, always busy, concerned faces speeding through the halls, not having the time or the energy to give anything, or anyone, a second glance. I hate the people that are forced to be there, the patients, looking always lethargic, bored, tired, and the patients' acquaintances, looking worried, tired, hopeless, praying for every kind of divinity that they can remember. I hate the smell of cleaning products, medicines and despair. I hate the woman at the front desk for being so unfazed, I hate the tiny number on the door, I hate the beeping noises inside the room and I hate the nurse for giving me a sympathetic smile before leaving us alone. But the thing I hate the most is to see Jiwon, my Jiwon, laying unconscious on this hospital bed. I try my best not to cry when I hold his hand, but I don't do a great job. I seat on a chair, keeping his hand on mine, and lay my head on the mattress while staring at his peaceful sleeping face. His beautiful frame is full of red and purplish bruises. I stay like that for a few minutes before he frowns and open his eyes. He keeps his eyes on the ceiling for a second, adjusting them to the bright light. Then he turns lightly to look at me.
- Hi.
His voice sounds hoarse and his expression shows no feeling.
- Hi.
I smile while replying, rubbing my thumb against the back of his hand. His face slowly turns into a small smile.
- How long has it been?
- Just a couple of hours.
He nods, closing his eyes for a bit, but holding my hand tighter.
- Can you tell me what happened?
He looks at me with pain on his eyes.
- Of course.
I kiss the back of his hand and give him an encouraging smile, patiently waiting for him to start talking.
