charlotte's point of view

"let's go out tonight. liz, you, and me. what do you say? it's the first time in ages we all have the same night off." christopher smiled down at me.

"if i say yes, will you get off me and let me sleep at least ten more minutes?"

he tapped his chin, as if he was thinking about it. "sure, but can you sleep ten more minutes if my dad requested your presence in his office two hours ago?"

my eyes widened as i jumped up, pushing christopher to the floor. "what?" i exclaimed. "why didn't you tell me earlier?" i stood up and pulled my pjs off as i rushed to my closet to grab something presentable.

"because he came here in the morning to tell you and you nodded and said you would be there." he stated, yet it sounded more like a question.

i changed into the first clothes i found, i didn't care whether they matched or not. i brushed my hair with my fingers and cringed when i saw a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror.

i raced out of my room and towards the emergency stairs. i didn't have time to wait for that damned elevator. i had no idea how i got to my uncle's office in under a minute, considering i had to basically fly up 2 stories.

my breathing was erratical when i arrived. my uncle looked at me like i grew a third head. "you okay, kiddo?"

i gave him a thumbs up as i dropped myself on one of the chairs in front of his messy desk.

he chuckled. "you're too much like your mother." he cleared his throat. "so, you're turning twenty in a month."

i groaned. "are you serious? this is what you wanted to talk about? i'm out of here."

"charlotte." he said sternly. "i can't be the director forever. this is supposed to be your job."

i scoffed. "i will never be as good as my parents. i don't want to be the director, you can keep my position."

"lottie, your parents think—"

"my parents think what?" i snapped. "that i'll be a great director, that i will totally not fuck everything up within a day? yeah, parents usually don't see their kid's flaws."

i looked down as he stood up. "lottie..." he trailed off, probably finding the right words.

i shook my head. "don't. i just– i think i'm going to need a bodyguard."
