Chapter Twenty: Breakaway|

"Remember all the things that you and I did first?

And now you're doing them with her"

Want U Back // Cher Lloyd

Enrique Carson

The familiar hum of school echoed in the background as I navigated the hallways, attempting to focus on anything but the chaos that had become my life. Veronica, my ex, had become a constant source of unwanted drama. Ignoring her was my only refuge during the school day, a temporary escape from the turmoil that had become my reality.

Throughout the day, she bombarded me with texts, pleading for a chance to talk.

When she finally showed up, the whole scene felt awkward

When she finally showed up, the whole scene felt awkward. The setting sun painted the sky with oranges and pinks, but between us, it was cold. She walked over, looking all desperate, and started rambling, trying to say sorry or whatever. It was like she'd read a bunch of breakup song lyrics and was now spitting them out, hoping they'd make everything okay.

She said something about messing up at the mall, causing a big scene. I couldn't forget that. We were just shopping for clothes for Ansel's twins, and she went off on us, making a whole mess. Now here we were, in the parking lot, dealing with the fallout.

Veronica's voice shook a bit, like she was on the verge of tears. I stayed silent, letting her spill her rehearsed lines. The fading sunlight caught her face, showing this mix of regret and vulnerability. It was hard not to roll my eyes, hearing her go on about regrets and first times. It felt like she'd memorized every cheesy breakup song ever.

The air around us was tense, and I could hear other students chatting nearby, making our weird moment feel even weirder. I stayed leaned against my Jeep, not buying into the whole emotional performance. The sun dropped lower, making those long shadows dance, just like the mess of our messed-up history."Hey." She says her hands coming towards me but I just move away. "Enrique, I just wanted to be honest okay? Weston has been talking to my brother Samuel, and he's bad news. I'm telling you you guys are both going to end up in places you don't want to be if she continues to speak to my brother."

I stayed silent, my gaze fixed on Veronica as she spun her web of words. She always acted so matter-of-factly, but after the lies she had told me before, everything she said seemed to go in one ear and out the other. I let her take control of the conversation, though my skepticism lingered.

"We came here to talk about us, right?" she asked, and I nodded, gesturing for her to continue. "Then talk about us. We don't need to talk about anyone else but us."

She scoffed, her tone dripping with attitude. "Enrique, I messed up. But that girl, she was taking my spot, baby. You were doing everything with her—going to the mall, hanging out with your family together. Everything that I have always wanted to do with you, you did it with her. I felt left out, and I felt so disconnected. I just want it to be us again, I want it to be just me and you, only us. I can prove it, I will do anything."
