"I bet you feel relieved huh?" I asked Ricardo as we drove the road, we had just finished finalizing our divorce so we decided we'd ride home together to see the kids. The radio was on low and Ricardo was leaned over as if he was about to take a nap.
He shakes his head, "I actually feel like that needed to be done, so yes."
The low hum of the radio was replaced by the sound of my phone ringing through my car speaker. Ricardo says, "It's Ansel,"
He answered it and Ansel began with, "Hey where are you guys at right now?"
I could tell something was going on just by the tone in his voice, "We are heading home now." Ricardo says sitting forward in his seat. He knew something was off too.
"Mom, you probably need to pull over I need to tell you something." he said, and I could hear the urgency in his voice. I pulled the car to the side, and Ricardo shot me a look, his eyes questioning.
Ansel started talking, he told me about seeing everyone earlier in the day at "school" I could tell something was off he had to be lying about going to school, "Remember Veronica?"
"Yeah the girl who was fighting Val, what about her." I asked him, "Did something happen to her?"
"Hmm, something happened with her. Valentina was with Dallas and Samuel. She followed them to where they were."
"Who's Dallas?" I questioned, I felt like I was being told a lot of gibberish.
"Dallas is Valentinas fiancé ma. They were gonna announce it this weekend to us."
"Were? Why didn't you let her tell me Ans?"
"Because ma," his voice began to crack like he was breaking down, "ma, Veronica killed Valentina and Dallas today." I felt my grip on the steering wheel tighten. It was like the whole world slowed down for a moment. Ricardo's face turned pale, and I saw him reach for my hand. Ansel continued, explaining how Veronica's actions had led to their deaths. "I had to identify their bodies ma. I was already at the hospital when they came in."
The weight of the news settled in the car, suffocating us. Ansel wanted to be the one to tell us before the media got hold of it. His voice cracked, and I could sense his struggle to keep it together. As he spoke, the passing scenery blurred, and all I could focus on was Ansel's voice. I glanced at Ricardo, his eyes locked onto the road ahead, absorbing the shock.
"Why were you at the hospital already are you okay?" I asked, I couldn't even think about the actual fact one of my babies were gone.
