{Dani's POV}
"It's time to get up sissy, IT'S ADOPTION DAY!" I wake up to a 4 year-old named Peter jumping on my bed. I smile and grab his wrist, making him squeal and fall. He giggles as I grin, tickling his feet.
"Guys, let's go. There are a lot of people here already." Paige says, rubbing her eyes. Her hair is up in a ponytail and she has a blue, plain dress on. I frown at Peter's choice of clothes. He was wearing his old Pacers jersey with the sweatpants I bought him last week. Sweet, but not appropriate to wear on Adoption Day.
He runs off behind Paige and goes into the living room, where everyone goes for the interviews. I smile at the blonde-haired boy and close my door before walking over to my small closet. I look at my choices and pick a varsity jacket my brother had before he died, grey skinny jeans, black high tops, and my only snapback. I bought all of my clothes off of money I make by dancing on the streets along with my dance group. Yeah, I dance. It's cool, but I'd rather sing. I know, stupid for me to say considering I don't talk.
After changing, I grab my favorite colored paper, a picture of my animal and head downstairs to the front room. Immediately I see at least 15 people looking at the kids. I walk to my normal spot, which is in the middle of the room, and sit down. I'm in the middle so that I can watch over the others. The person who works here is usually in the hospital with her many injuries. The kids and I think that she should've been fired years ago, but the owner can't afford it.
"Hey, love. What's your name?" A woman asks, bending down to my height. Mary leans over my seat and smiles.
"Her name is Danielle. She doesn't talk much." She says and sits back down.
"...Oh. Well, I'll be on my way, then. Nice meeting you, Danielle." The woman throws an obviously fake smile at me and hurries off to a new girl two seats down. Tears fill my eyes and Mary hugs me.
"She wasn't nice. Don't worry, the right people will come soon. I'll be here though!" She grins, holding my hand. I smile gratefully at her and return my attention to the floor in front of me.
Soon enough, two pairs of shoes appear in front of me. I slowly look up, my hair slightly messed up. The woman smiles brightly at me.
"Hello." The man barely smiles at me. I shyly wave back and look at Mary, who was being interviewed.
"What's your name?" The man asks. Peter laughs and turns to the man.
"Her name is Danielle but we call her Big Sister because she takes care of us! Good luck getting her to talk to you!" Peter laughs hysterically, bringing a smile to my face.
"Well, she seems like a very nice girl for taking care of you. In fact, why don't we take a weight off of her shoulders and adopt you." She points at Peter, who turns to me with tears in his eyes.
"I don't wanna leave you." He sniffles. I pull him into my lap and hug him tightly, him hugging me back tighter.
"Sweetie, please! You seem like you are very talented and have a lot in common with our other little boy." The woman pleads, bending down to our height. Peter looks at me for approval, so I nod, encouraging him to go. He smiles and hugs me again.
"I'll miss you very, very much. I love you, Sissy." He whispers, making my eyes water up until my tears spill out onto my cheeks. I lightly kiss Peter's forehead and set him down on the ground. He waves as he skips off with his new family, who were heading off to the office to sign papers. I smile weakly and look at the floor, wiping my tears.
"That's all for today everybody, I'm sorry." Paige smiles weakly as she didn't get adopted either. I stand up and go to set Mary on my hip, but realize she isn't there. I guess she got adopted too. Both of my little buddies are gone. Well, this sucks.
"Wait!" A man yells, out of breath. I smile. Maybe he'll be the one to adopt me. "I need directions." My shoulders slump in disappointment.
"Sure, sir. Where do you need to go?" Paige asks.
"The arena closest to here. I'm trying to catch a concert." Well that explains why he looks like a sweaty baboon. Okay, so my head can be a bit rude sometimes, but not much. I think.
"Oh, uh, you know that huge building down the street?"
"Yeah, what about it?" The man asks, making me feel like laughing, but I don't.
"That's kinda the arena." Paige says, showing the man the door. I suppress a grin and run up the stairs to my room. Sitting on my bed, I look down the street towards the arena.
I wonder who is performing there tonight. I think to myself. Probably some lame singer. Yeah, my head totally isn't rude. Ehem, maybe it is. Oops.
"Danielle, we want to go to the park. Can we?" I nod and stand up, walking behind Paige. "Okay, we can go. Remember, behave." Paige says. I smile at the squealing kids and take the new kid's hand along with Claire's. She smiles up at me and looks at the new kid.
"Hello, I'm Claire. What's your name?" She asks quietly. The boy smiles a little and looks up at her.
"Seth." He says softly, gripping my hand.
"I like that name!" Claire grins, making Seth blush adorably. We walk down a few blocks until all 10 of us get to the playground. I release the kids' hands and walk over to the lake, sitting down at the edge.
Not too long into the time I sat there, someone sits next to me. Like, really close. We were almost touching.
"Beautiful day, isn't it?" I turn to look at Max, flashing a small smile. He smiles back and sighs. "You know, what I said at school yesterday was true, right? I hate seeing you teased. It honestly makes me want to take you with me and run away, but I don't think my family would approve of that." We laugh.
I clamp a hand over my mouth, realizing what I had just done.
"Wait, what was that? Did you just laugh?" My eyes widen in shock as I nod. "That's awesome!" I smile and return my gaze to the lake.
"Danielle, no time to chitchat with your boyfriend!" Paige shouts from the play set, making me blush.
"We're not dating!" Max shouts back, looking at me with an almost unnoticeable frown. I look at him and smile a little, letting him know that I'm alright, even though I'm not. Inside, my whole world is crumbling to pieces, even though I don't know why. Maybe it's because Max is sad. Yeah, that must be it. I hate seeing people sad.
"Well, anyway, It's getting late. We need to get the kids back and give them baths." Paige says, walking up to us. I nod and start to get up, Max kindly helping me. I smile gratefully at him and brush off the back of my shorts. He leans in to hug me, but then, realizing what he was doing, he puts his hands down. I ignore the gesture and softly hug him. He laughs into the hug, making me smile. I release him and jog over to Paige, who was smirking.
"You like him, don't you!" I look at her weirdly. "Someone's got a crush!" She wiggles her eyebrows. I roll my eyes and take hold of two kids' hands as we head off toward the orphanage. Okay, so maybe Max is a little cute, but I wouldn't consider him a crush.

As I get ready for bed, I think of today.
Does Max like me? The thought crosses my mind. Maybe he does, the world may never know.
I fall asleep on the thought.
