Chapter 16

{Alyssa's POV}

I can't believe she lied.

I know I'm probably overreacting right now, but seriously?! Not speaking for 9 years and talking for one day, just as someone new comes to the orphanage? Why didn't she tell me about it?

I sigh and and grab my phone, headphones, charger, a sweatshirt, a few bucks I managed to keep throughout my orphanages, shoving them into my backback. Quickly, I open the widndow and jump down. Don't worry, I didn't actually jump. I climbed down a tree that was only a foot away from the window.

As soon as I hit the ground, I run down the backstreet and around the corner. Someone bumps my shoulder as I jog past, making me turn to them.

"Sorry. Hey, I'm Alec. What's your name?" He asks, holding his hand out for me to take.

"I'm Alyssa." I smile.

"Well, Alyssa, do you know a girl that goes by the name of Dani?" I could he liked her, just by the small glint in his eyes when he mentions her name. I nod.

"Yeah, why?" I ask.

"I wanted to talk to her but I don't know where she lives."

"Oh, you might find her if you turn around the corner. There's a girl named Danielle who lives in the orphanage but call her Dani." I smile. "I gotta go. Nice to meet you." I run off before he can say anything else.

{Dani's POV}

"What?! What do you mean?" I ask frantically.

"She's not here. I checked everywhere!" Malissa sighs deeply, pacing back and forth.

"Please tell me this all just a big prank." I beg. She looks at me and shakes her head. I sigh.

"She escaped through the window. That's all I know." She says and I grab my sweatshirt.

"I'm going to go look for her." I say and jog over to Leigh. "I'm going to go look for Alyssa. I'll be right back." Leigh nods.

"But wait, what happened? Did she run away or something?" She asks, confused. I nod.

"I really need to go now. The more time we talk the farther she could be from us. Bye." I flash a quick smile and dash off.

"She's going to go find Alyssa..." I hear Leigh say to the other girls as I turn the corner. I'm stopped by Alec.

"Hey. I wanted to talk to you." He smiles cheekily at me, making my stomach flutter.

"Hey. As much as I want to talk, I really need to go find Alyssa." I say sadly.

"Wait, a girl named Alyssa just ran through here. Mind if I come along?" He asks.

"If you want to run, be my guest." I smirk and jog off towards the direction he pointed in. I hear him chuckle as he catches up to me.

"Will do." He winks. I roll my eyes as we reach an intersection.

"So what'd you want to tell me?" I ask, stopping at the red light.

"I wanted to ask you if-"

"Alyssa!" I yell as I see her dash into an ally. "Come on, we gotta go! Tell me later." I smile and grab his hand, leading toward the ally.

As we round the corner, Alyssa sighs.

"What do you want, mute?" She asks, crossing her arms.

"First off, I'm not a mute anymore. And second off, I wanted to apologise. I'm really sorry for not telling you. I figured, if I didn't tell you then maybe you wouldn't judge me like all the other kids. I thought I would have a new start." I sigh, dropping my head into my hands. Alec rubs my back softly.

"I'm sorry too. I overreacted." Alyssa mumbles and walks up to me, pulling me into a hug.

"Are we friends again?" I ask in her ear. She nods as we pull apart. "Great." I smile.

Alec smiles at the two of us.

"Oh, um, this is Alec. He's Max and I's friend." I say, motioning to the frowning boy beside me.

"I'm just your friend. Max ignores me now." He shrugs. I have a feeling that's not exactly why he was frowning. "Oh, and I need to talk to Dani alone, if you don't mind." He says to Alyssa, who nods and walks away from us.

"What'd you want to say to me earlier?" I ask. He steps closer and takes my hand.

"I was going to ask if you would be my-"

"Ahhhh help me!" A little kid yells from farther into the ally.

"Really?!" Alec mumbles angrily to himself.

"Let's go check it out." I say and pull him toward the screams.

We soon see an eight year-old, all bloodied and bruised as an older man slaps and punches him endlessly.

I quickly run over to the kid, shielding him from any more hits. I wince as punches were thrown at my back, the back of my head, and my neck.

Soon it all stops and I look up to see Alec fighting the man. I turn to the kid.

"Hey, I'm Danielle. What's your name?" I ask softly, a small smile on my face. The boy smiles.

"Gavin." I smile at his quiet voice and look back slightly, just to see Alec punch the man in the face.

"Well, Gavin, I'm Dani. We need to get you out of here." I say quietly and pick him up gently, setting him on my hip. "Alec, we're leaving." I smile at the strong boy. He nods and punches the guy one last time before releasing the man shirt and jogging over to us.

"Hey little guy, I'm Alec. You're safe now." Alec flashes a smile and holds his hand in the air for a high five. Gavin gives him a high five and turns to me.

"Is he telling the truth? Am I really safe?" He asks me with his bright green eyes.

"As safe as possible, Gavin." I look over to see Alec on his phone. "Who are you texting?" I ask casually, hoping it's not another girl.

"My mom." He smiles up at me before returning to his phone. "Looks like you're coming with us to the orphanage. After that, we'll see." He sends a noticeable wink my way, hinting at what 'We'll see' means. He wants his parents to adopt Gavin.

I have a crush and I think he likes me too ☺️ Everyone says so.

Oh, and hE SINGS ASDFGHJKL 😩 I think he said he's planning on auditioning for American Idol 😀

Who knew that it could start with trying to kick a volleyball away from him 😂 We don't have soccer balls in our gym so he used a volleyball.

Okay, okay, enough of my rant, I know I said I wouldn't update in two weeks but this is an exception ☺️
