It was getting close to christmas.
Even though it wasn't like it was in the old world, Hampton still found ways to celebrate. They took out an old christmas tree and put it up. The whole community would come together for christmas dinner on December 25th. However the Patricks weren't sure if they could make it. The baby was due any day now, so there was nothing to do but wait.
"So do you think today is the day?" asked Matthew as he gave his wife a cup of tea.
"I don't know Matthew. Maybe." she said taking the tea. Matt sat next to her. He faced towards her and put his arm behind her.
"Are you just as nervous as I am?" he asked. She took a sip of her tea and sat it on the coffee table.
"Yes. I am scared about the birth. Women and babies died all the time back when natural birth was the only way. Then science came up with epidural and everything was fine. Now we're back to what it was like before. I just hope nothing goes wrong." Matthew leaned forward and kissed the side of his wife's forehead.
"Will get through this together. I promise." he said. He pulled her in for a kiss. They kissed each other softly then pulled away. Steph looked down and held her belly. She rubbed the top of it gently.
"I just want to hold our baby in my arms. I can't wait to meet them." she said with a smile on her face. Matthew pulled his wife into a hug. She laid her head on his shoulder. He laid his head on top of her's.
"Don't worry. Will meet them any day now." he said.
"Ahh." said Steph sitting up putting her hand on her back.
"You okay hon?"
"Yah just the back pain you get at this time of the pregnancy. Could you rub it please?" she asked.
"Sure." he said with a smilie. She turned her back towards him and he massaged her back and shoulders.
"Thanks Matthew. This feels great." she said.
"Anything for you."
"Hey you know what this means?"
"What?"
"I'm getting close to giving birth." she said with a smile. Matthew paused the back rub for a moment to wrap his arms around her collar bone and pull her into a hug. She hugged his arms back as she let out a giggle.
It was 11:00 at night on December 23rd when Steph felt a sharp jolt of pain in her back.
She shot up from her sleep and put her hand on her lower back.
"God the back pain has been getting worse and worse lately. I wonder how close I am?" she whispered to herself. She felt another jolt of pain in her back. She got up and went into the living room so she wouldn't wake Matthew. She leaned forward against the back of the couch. Her back was in a lot of pain. It wasn't until a 3rd jolt of pain when she felt something wet run down her leg. Then after a moment it all clicked.
"Matthew. Matt! MATT!" she said as she yelled for her husband. "MATT WAKE UP!!" she cried. Matthew was sound asleep when he thought he heard her screams. Then he realized he wasn't dreaming. He woke to find her not next to him in bed.
"MATT! PLEASE!" He heard her cries coming from the living room. He got up and ran into there. He saw her leaning against the couch and immediately ran to her side. She turned and clutched him with her arms.
"Steph what's wrong!?!" he asked frantically.
"Matt this is it. My water just broke!''
"Oh my god! Oh my god! Okay. You're going to be fine. Let's get you back in bed." he said. Steph leaned on him and clutched him as he helped her walk back to their room. They were mid way there when Ashlen woke up and came in.
