They had been in the apocalypse for almost a year now.
Even though some days the routine would get boring, they still had to do it. Wake up, eat, get ready, hunt all day, come back, cook, eat again, get ready for bed, go to sleep. Everyday since Matt and Steph had arrived at the cabin that was the routine. Even when Ashlen joined it wasn't any different. However just because it was boring doesn't mean they weren't living. Because the routine was boring, it meant nothing was happening. No starvation, only the occasional cuts or bruises, no kidnappings, nothing. Boring ment they were okay. Even the zombies had started to slow down. Steph wrote down the observation in her journal at one point.
July 19, 2007
The zombies are different now. We saw a herd pass today from inside the cabin. They were more pale now. The skin also had a faint tint of green as well. They don't run anymore. It's like a faster paced walk. They also look more decomposed. They have these cuts on them now where the green veins run that look purple. It's like whatever is underneath the skin now is decaying. It's hard to describe it but maybe this might help someone who finds this. More updates soon.
That of course was in July. Now it's September. They were starting to develop a theory that the zombies were starting to decay.
"It's simple." said Matthew as they sat in a circle eating dinner while a massive thunder storm happened outside.
"The zombies are dead. Yes they move around and act alive. But they are still dead. They still deacy like any dead thing would. The only reason it's slowed down is because they are only slightly alive.''
"I wish we were still in college." said Stephanie. "Then we could do research on this theory. But the Duke campus is probably destroyed now with nothing left but abandoned buildings and zombified staff and students. Is there anything you remember from when you studied neuroscience that might help you with this theory?" Stephanie asked. Along with being a theatre major, Matt was also a neuroscience major as a fallback in case acting didn't go well.
"I don't know. I mean some stuff is obvious. Like the parts of your brain that create thought, feeling, personality, or anything that made you well, you are gone. But I would like to know which parts are left. That could help us."
"Also if we are right in the fact that they are decaying, how long will it take before they are gone? I think it's obvious they decay slower than the average human does, but we need to figure out how long they have." as soon as Steph finished her sentence a loud crack was heard outside and a flash of light lit up the cabin. It made all three of them jump and slightly scream.
"Dang that lightning was close." said Ashlen.
"Yah this storm is almost like a hurricane." said Stephanie. She got up to take a closer look outside. They had noticed earlier that day some very dark clouds rolling in. But they couldn't get a good look at them because of the trees. However, they heard thunder and went back to the cabin. When Steph reached the window she noticed between flashes of lightning how strong the wind was. They could even hear it howling from inside the cabin.
"Wow I guess we got so into talking we didn't really notice how strong this storm was until now." said Steph as she made her way back over to where she sat.
"Do you think it's a hurricane Steph?" asked Matthew.
"I don't know. The wind seems too strong to be your average thunderstorm. But not strong enough to be an intense hurricane. At most it's probably a category 1." she said. Then another lightning bolt struck near the cabin only this time it was followed almost instantly by a loud bursting, cracking noise.
